Album Review – Pale Shelter "Normal Features" EP

When you have a band comprised of key players in other rad bands like Bubonic Bear and Fight Amp it’s a tall order to fulfill peoples expectations. Those of you who’ve heard some of Pale Shelter‘s music know that it contains elements of their prior artistic ventures, yet anyone who has played music knows that you grow a bit past what your band sounds like and eventually you either start a solo or side project to meet those needs. That said, Pale Shelter’s Noise Rock, Post Punk/Hardcore sound completely fucking RIPS and is worthy of much more than the side project status that many may come to expect.

While their past projects really crank out some heavy as fuck riffs and guttural vocals, Pale Shelter pulls back in a very awesome way. This is not to say their music is soft or doesn’t rock, but where they’ve restrained their sound they more than make up for it in artistic sensibility. This creates more tension and song structures that show off their growth as musicians in a direction that most wouldn’t assume they’d pursue. Even if you’ve never heard of their past projects, “Normal Features” is an EP totally worth a listen for amazing music in our scene right now!

Starting off “Normal Features” is the pulsating and heavy driven track “No Cable!” This song kicks off the EP with awesome guitar riffs that are a bit more angular and vocals that are clean, yet establish the grittiness in a much different way than, I personally, was expecting. The drums explode for a short amount of time that ends of the track as awesome as it started. The slower and more steady “Easy Fix” doesn’t lose any momentum, but the stripped down guitar riff makes this song killer as all hell. The drum beat during the verse captivated my interest because it counters the simplicity of the song with a complex beat, perfectly, giving a truly dichotomous feel to the song as a whole. The track lets lose and totally rocks two thirds of the way through, but brings it back to end the song in a somber way rather than rocking out, which in my book is a totally killer way to show how diverse their abilities are on this EP. Not to compare too much, but “Sink / Swim” has some cues that sound to me like they were influenced by Multicult. The way the bass and guitar meld together and the song structure points to these inspirations, but the song as a whole definitely maintains the Pale Shelter sound that you’ve come to expect over the last two songs. I love how again how angular the guitar riffs are and when the chorus kicks in this song fucking SLAYS! Then end fucking RIPS as well! The off time riffs and marching snare in some parts on “Towers The Body” blow away any standard practice in noise rock, punk or hardcore! This song is absolutely a fucking rocker that takes you through twists and turns, but when the solo part comes in it adds another dimension to their sound that wasn’t there previously which completely rules! The end drops an octave that makes the song rock even more and then ends with a riff that was no where else in the song. Finally, “Thick Grin” slides in and slithers around with parts that peak here and there. “You’ll disappoint your closest friends” is repeated over and over again laying the guilt trip thick. A pulsating drum beat comes in with chaotic guitar noise and then the song finishes out as amazing as it started off with a clear stop.

“Normal Features” by Pale Shelter is one of the better, thought provoking EPs to drop so far this year and while it’s still pretty early, I can say with a lot of confidence that there won’t be much that will come close to it. You can hear the effort and talent injected into this project to not only be different from what you may expect from their band, but to really set the bar high for other post punk / hardcore bands out there. I’d go as far to say that all of the previous comments above aren’t limited to just our local scene either, but to nationally recognized acts as well!
