Sid looks over his shoulder and his eyes find the only person yet to congratulate him. Leckie is standing there, his face as stiff as cement. He had been smiling earlier, but that smile is long gone now, replaced by something Sid is reluctant to name, whether it be envy, disappointment, anger, or — worse than all the others — indifference. Whatever it is, Leckie is far away until another name is drawn and called and the resulting tumult knocks him out of his head. His eyes flick up to Sid’s face, looking hard and polished like twin marbles made all the more blue by the exhaustion that rims them with red. He looks worn out, and they all looked worn out, but Leckie looks more worn out than most. “Congrats, Phillips,” he says flatly, and his voice registers in Sid’s ears like the dragging of a dull blade.
