Northtown is compact and easily enjoyed EP by North Las Vegas native Shamir Bailey. Housey pads, silky vocals and tight grooves make up the breadth of this five song gem. It’s easy to hear a youthful Michael Jackson resonating throughout Northtown, but it’s nicer to hear some real soul searching and introspection amidst this rich synthy palette as well. Here you’ll find lyrics, sentiments and true emotion that sounds like something written by someone with well over a mere 19 years under their belt.
This is a great little EP, but for me, the real clincher is the final song “Lived and Died Alone.” This simple little folk song (a cover of Lindi Ortega’s 2013 track) let’s the swirling synths and rhythms of the preceding material drift off into the night and leaves us with a haunting, sparse little dirge that sounds like it was recorded in a different age.
