back at it again with a post that will weed out which one of y’all are anti-black and colorist

do you like the inflammatory title of this post bc i do but i’m an aries so i live for this shit

so i feel the need to make this post bc i’ve seen a lot of weird shit being said after last night’s VMA’s (mostly on twitter bc that’s where conversations go to die). i think it’s important that we acknowledge the history that has brought us our favorite music while understanding who is currently profiting off of it.

that’s right: i’m talking about the fact that reggaeton was started by black people!!

but on a much more personal note, it’s one of the reasons why i lowkey hold a grudge against artists like j balvin and rosalia (just to name a few, there are so many more i’m not trying to hate on y’alls faves). bc i’ve seen some folks like daddy yankee acknowledge and pay respects to the og reggaeton artists like don omar and el general, and that’s awesome and the energy we need. but then we have j balvin out here saying rihanna isn’t marriage material (yeah he actually said that) and rosalia saying she’s latino when she’s not (which does actually matter). even bad bunny (who y’all know i love) is a white puerto rican who is prominent in a genre started by black folks, and is making hella bank.

now i’m not saying that people of all races can’t make reggaeton music. that’d be ridiculous. what i AM saying is that i will personally always do my best to honor and respect the history of the music i hold so dear to my heart, and uplift the voices of those who are most marginalized in the community (POC, WOC, queer folks, etc.) and i hope we continue to see that in award shows and major record deals. because when white latinx and spanish folks are the only ones to be formally recognized as valuable artists, we are disrespecting the culture behind the music. and i think that is just as important as enjoying the music itself.

I need to say something.

So I know that I’ve been posting a lot of stuff regarding black lives matter and that a lot of you don’t follow me for that type of content.

It’s just that this outburst in the movement had made me reevaluate how I feel and what kind of person I want to be. I have never considered myself to be outwardly racist but I also didn’t do anything when the movement began for a lot of reasons. I have also learned so much more since the first time the movement was started and I can’t, in good conscience, ignore any of what their struggle is. It’s not right, it never has been, and I’m constantly learning how to be better about it.

I’ve always tried to be the empathetic person and I’m always learning to how to do that better. Right now, that means that I share information and do everything that I can to help this movement. I also understand that many of you come to tumblr to escape it from your other social media. If the content I post strains your mental well-being and you have to block or unfollow me, I completely understand. I only want what is best for you and don’t want to hurt anyone.

I am also willing to have conversations with people if you feel like you need to talk to anyone. I am not black and I do not pretend to understand their struggle. However, I’m not going to use that as an excuse to not talk about it. I would love to learn from you and have a healthy discussion about how we can all be a better person and a better ally.

However, if you are someone who does not support this movement with the problems it chooses to address and/or discounts the instrinsic and priceless value that is a black life, I do not wish to talk to you. Feel free to leave my page. To say that one life is worth more than another is absolutely disgusting. If you are here to try and tell me otherwise, I will not give you the illusion that that idea is in any way shape or form morally excusable the way that this white-driven society has done for centuries.

If you’ve read this far, I just want to end with a thank you for sticking with me thus far on this journey. Thank you if you choose to stay. Thank you if you choose to talk to me to educate me. I promise that I will return to the droves of content you were here for. But for right now, let us be better human beings.
