Hey! I’m makinging an Attempt to Describe images or transcribe text from images When my hands are not working well Enough to draw.
I admit I haven’t even tried to find the proper tumblr format to describe an image or if we’re supposed to use a Special tag when we do.
I’m leaving typos in this because when I do descriptions it’s dictated & this is how the raw text looks. When I attempt to do descriptions I fix typos manually.
I was psyched to find you Because I have a serious case of our flag means death & Good omens.
Do you have suggestions about how to do this right? I started because i could. Looked at your pinned post and wondered if there were other things I should know.
The info on your tagging system takes me to a desktop version Tumblr, little hard to see on my phone.
I just thought asking somebody who knew their stuff would save my hands, Voice & Energy reserves For doing the Text correctly.
I use the tumblr app if that makes a difference.
Thank you for everything you do. That sounds kind of generic, I seriously appreciate the work you & everyone else puts into this.
Thank you for the message!
The most universal format for image descriptions on tumblr is that it starts with “[Image description:” and ends with “end image description]”, so that it’s clear when it begins and ends. “Image description” can also be shortened to “ID” (which is best on screenreaders if it’s capitalized; otherwise it is read as a word and not the letters.
When I reblog posts and add a description (both on this blog & my main), I tag it with “#described”, though if you’re describing an original post of yours, you could add something like “#described art” as well.
For this blog in particular, I have a list of things for myself to consider for describing art and gifs, and that’s the following:
Image type: Gifset, art, etc. If it’s art, what type of art is it? Digital or traditional, if you can tell, and is it a drawing, sketch, or painting? (I generally default to “drawing” unless it is obviously a digital or traditional painting or sketch.)
Outfits: Are the characters wearing what they do canonically? If they have multiple canon outfits, specify which one. If not, describe what their outfit is.
Pose: How are they posed? Are they leaning on something, sitting, standing, etc? And if there’s multiple people in the drawing, what’s their pose in relation to each other? (Like are they standing separately, or standing close and leaning on each other? Where are they touching?)
Facial expressions: This one speaks for itself more. Do the character/s look blank, amused, unhappy, frustrated, distraught, joyous, etc?
Color: For gifsets, if it’s been recolored, make a note of that; otherwise you can leave this part out. For art, this step would include noting if it’s colored in or not, or if there’s anything special about the coloring (ex: very orangey)
For art, how much of their body is showing? (shoulders up, chest up, waist up, etc)
If you want other guides for describing images, I can point you to two master posts: here and here. I would also recommend checking out this post on placement of image descriptions, and this one on video descriptions.
Thank you for telling me about the tags page! I've made it into a post as well, so hopefully this works better.
