Fully a roach just fell from the ceiling and into my THANKFULLY blanketed lap. I'm now sitting in a circle of raid under a lacey robe thing that is the closest thing I have to a net and "fumigating" the area with weed smoke. We killed the one but goddamn I'm not safe in my own home.
FYDL D-A-T Day 9: Maybes
Charity Link Unrequited Pepper/Darcy, pre-Darcy/Jane
The face Pepper made when JARVIS told her about Tony blowing a hole in the wall of the penthouse was one Darcy had never seen on her before. And Darcy had seen many: she might not have been a scientist like Jane, but she was pretty pro at observing and remembering people’s emotions. She’d wanted to be a hypnotist when she was in 7th grade, and although she never managed to actually hypnotize someone (not for lack of trying – that had been a fun year of school), her time almost obsessively studying websites and library books about facial expressions stuck in her brain. It was part of why she’d picked poli-sci. It had made her really good at talking to others – but it also made all of her crushes sort of creepy.
Case in point: Darcy was mentally adding Pepper’s mix of rage-amusement-frustration – sort of similar to the look she wore a lot around Tony, but with less love and more surprise – to her list of 34 other Pepper-expressions. Once Pepper had excused herself to deal with the issue, Darcy pointedly went back to cataloging Jane’s science journals. Her boss, however, was looking at her with irritation. “Darcy, you really need to get over her.”
“Jane, you’re back from science-land! When was the last time you hydrated?” Darcy said, pointedly cheerful. Jane narrowed her eyes – once she set her mind to an interesting enough problem, not even coffee could tear her away. The same was true when it came to Darcy’s love life.
“Darcy, don’t even pretend like you don’t know who I’m talking about. Every time we drink you end up talking about Pepper for at least half an hour. And I’ve seen the files you have on our old laptop. “Reasons Pepper Potts Is CEO of My Soul, Part Two”? Really? Why is that even on there?”
Darcy turned and looked at her. “It’s on there ‘cause if it was on any of the work computers Tony would totally find out from JARVIS. And how did you even discover that? It was in my school folder!”
“I was looking for the data spreadsheet from last June,” Jane replied, crossing her arms. Her face was yelling “Don’t Avoid This”, and Darcy mentally prepped herself for one of Jane’s lectures. Instead, she sighed, and said, “I don’t know why you do this when you know it isn’t going to happen.”
“One, if a guy can survive for seventy years under ice, Pepper could one day realize that I’m amazing. Or she and Tony could open their relationship. Two – touché.”
If it was possible to glare at Darcy even harder, Jane would be. Her ex was still sort of a touchy subject. “I didn’t know it wasn’t going to happen. And I just – I care about you.”
Darcy looked at the lab’s clock. 5:47. She walked over to her desk, opened the bottom drawer, and took out a full bottle of foreign vodka. Jane came over and sat in her spinny chair. Clearly, Darcy’s relationship issues were trumping science, at least for today.
“Where did you even get that? Has that been here the whole time?”
“Tony put one in like every desk in here last month. Apparently, when he gets sleep deprived enough he’s dangerous near shopping catalogues.” Darcy returned from the fridge with two mugs from the cupboard and a bottle of Sprite. She put them on the desk and Jane got to work. She was killer when it came to mixing drinks.
“Okay, I’m setting my mind to getting over Pepper Potts tonight….maybe,” Darcy allowed. She pulled up the chair from the nearest desk and watched Jane pour vodka into her constellation mug.
“Fine. Maybe,” Jane allowed, amused.
The next morning, a bleary-eyed and really hungover Darcy made her way down to the lab. Open on her desk, next to an empty bottle, was their laptop, open to a new document. Darcy sat down and, squinting against the light of the screen, scrolled to the first page. “Reasons Jane Foster is Girlfriend Material, Part One.”
I’m hurriedly typing this from an airport. I’m going to be out of the country for the rest of the drabble-a-thon, but I hope to still update. I thought of this a while back, and I kind of consider it the gate to me writing fic again. I just realized the end is a bit like this (https://agentdarcylewis.tumblr.com/post/163972419599/batmanisagatewaydrug-look-i-know-its-been-like) other post, but I think (?) I thought of that before I saw it. Also, I didn’t really look this over, so hopefully I’ll edit it later and it’s not tooo bad, lol.
Today’s charity isn’t really related. It’s UNICEF, a UN fund supporting moms and kids.
