A Small Token Response || Self-Para
Out of all the ones she could remember, this had definitely been the most depressing Mother's Day Layla had experienced. A good majority of the residents hated this date for one reason or another. Either they despised their mom with a burning passion, or they were saddened by the fact that their mother wasn't around. Layla's mother herself, was one of her least favorite people, but you shouldn't let one person in your life represent a whole group should you? Just because one person may not be decent, doesn't automatically deem anyone similar as exactly the same.
That said, all this talk made Layla highly doubtful of herself. If this many people were unhappy due to family, what were the chances of her being any better? To emphasize this possibility, she had no idea what she was doing. All, or she assumed most, of them were well of age and actually prepared to have a family, but not her. She was just waiting for the moment she messed things up for Mia, if she hadn't already. She didn't tell anyone this or show it, no. Because showing weakness would mean that her parents were right, and she would never let that be true. So everyday, she did her best to remain as determined and positive as she could, for both Mia and herself. Layla turned to face the sleeping toddler next to he, and gave her a light kiss on the nose. She was thankful to have Mia, because it gave her purpose. That's the thing about looking after another person wholeheartedly, you in return become a better person.
The knock on the door caused Layla to jump. She looked down at the child still sleeping and then to the clock across the room. Who could possibly be visiting her this late at night? She had already checked in, so staff wasn't an option. Ian usually warned her before visiting, so he was out of the question. With sleep in her eyes, she climbed around Mia and opened the door. To her dismay, no one was on the other side. With a scowl of confusion, she looked left and right down the hall, and both directions were clear. If this was some form of ding dong ditch, she was not very amused.
That was until she looked down and saw the colorful flowers and adorable pink bear at her feet. She gasped and covered her mouth in an attempt to cover a squeal. Layla then proceeded to pick them up and close her door behind her. To avoid waking up Mia and keep the room dim, she turned on a small lamp to read the card.
Flowers for one of the best mothers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, and a little friend for a child who couldn’t be any more lucky to be born from such a loving and beautiful woman.
- A friend.
A friend. She thought over that for a moment. Maybe everyone got something? She went back to the door and opened it slightly to peek down the hall again. No one else had things in front of their door. She closed the door once again and rested her head against it, holding back tears. After composing herself, Layla tucked the teddy bear under Mia's arms and turned off the light. Thank you, friend.
