Is Edd OCD?
Edd 100% has OCD and you can pry this headcanon from my cold, dead hands. Hopefully I’ll be a zombie so I can fight back, because LET ME TELL YOU this is a very important headcanon/practically canon to me. I can relate to Edd’s OCD because I have it too and it is very clear to me that Edd does.
First off, important distinction; the argument could be made that Edd has OCPD, not OCD, a disorder that isn’t the same, though it is often comorbid with OCD. I don’t go with this argument, personally, as one of the things, quoting from Wikipedia; (a sin, I know) for people with OCD, these behaviors are unwanted and seen as unhealthy, being the product of anxiety-inducing and involuntary thoughts, while for people with OCPD they are egosyntonic (that is, they are perceived by the subject as rational and desirable).
Edd shows at several times, even if he does tend to portray his compulsions as completely rational, he is aware that they’re not, and also, more importantly, he obviously and quite often has intrusive thoughts, the most important thing that qualifies the OCD.
He has obtrusive, spiraling self hatred and thoughts, often obsessively tending to something to attempt to fix said feelings, even if not explicitly stated (See ‘Fistful of Ed’). He has a lot of moments where his thoughts are obtrusive and distressing, so much that I feel like listing them seems like a really long chore. He also grows increasingly distressed when he cannot complete his rituals (see ‘Cleanliness is Next to Edness’) and cannot handle his thoughts often.
He outright states he cannot sleep comfortably without ordering his environment to a certain state, labeled completely. He obsesses over order and even if it seems illogical, labels things, even in situations where it seems detrimental to what he’s doing (Labeling things during Big Picture Show). While Edd admittedly is given orders to do his chores by his parents and obviously fears his parents rejection, he still clearly finds pleasure in completing the rituals set out by his parents, and unlike the sticky notes, the labels are all his, he feels (at least as my interpretation) uncomfortable without knowing he can keep inventory of everything he has so he never loses anything, so he knows where everything is, so nothing can go wrong in that way. in theory. He also repeats actions and thoughts (generally repeating his words, another thing about OCD)
So hell yes he does. It’s not even the Hollywood ‘just wants things clean and orderly’ version, it may be still centered on cleanliness, but we see he has the obtrusive thoughts and discomfort associated with actual OCD.
