Avatar the last airbender rant
Everyone seems to think the great devide is a terrible filler episode that they could’ve just thrown away, but I really don’t think so.
The great devide shows the tension between two groups, as some kind of extend to the tension that had been growing between Katara and Sokka since the very first episode. It showed every story has two sides and hearing out only one of them isn’t exactly the way to go.
It also developed Aangs character, showing he’d rather lie and fix a conflict with words rather than with violence. We’d never know what truly happened but that’s okay, it happened 100 years ago and it just doesn’t matter anymore. Just as this 100 year conflict could be resolved, so will the 100 year war be resolved.
Aang didn’t have to solve the problems between these two groups but he is a peacemaker so he did.
In the end, it did develop Katara, Sokka and Aang more as characters imo. Could you skip it without missing too much of the plot? Sure. But it’s still not a totally useless episode
