from your WIP list, I'd love to know about Trevelyan horse riding and Fenris gardening

i’ve dusted off these wips and pulled them to the top of the list because they seem to be the ones people are interested in 😂

the trevelyan horse riding fic is about the horse race quest and freshly out of the circle mage Avery feeling free while racing and then realising she’s still a little trapped with the inquisition, there’s a little more detail here

Fenris gardening is about Fenris learning healthy coping mechanisms, healing and beginning to feel at home by starting his own little garden and there’s a bit more information here

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

I’m very excited for the next couple of chapters in The Far Shore: Hawke is finally about to go rescue Fenris from the Fade, and this is one of those big turning points I’ve been waiting for for literal years.

I had a lot of fun playing with character perception depending on which side of the Veil they’re on -- I wanted the Fade to feel weird and not quite right, but I also wanted an underlying logic and continuity to things, so things aren’t just weird for the sake of being weird. I also tried to show ... different states of consciousness, if that makes sense? Bits of conversation from the real world spill into Fenris’s dreams (the conversations between Vat and Kaaras and the bits from the Qun), and he gets pulled deeper and deeper as the demon’s influence becomes stronger, despite some moments of lucidity on Fenris’s part. He also came, uh, VERY close to escaping without even realizing it in his last chapter.

I’m pretty happy I took a risk with all of that, even though I feel it didn’t quite work in the end. I still hope it will pay off now that Hawke’s about to go into the Fade herself. I was reading The Southern Reach trilogy and The Red Tree when I was drafting these chapters, so I borrowed a bit from both of these books -- the tunnel/tower from Annihilation became a bit of a thing, so in the next chapter Hawke’s going to be exploring some of Fenris’s memories in a tunnel first, and then a tower in an analogous scene at the end of the fic.

9. Do animals like them? Do they get on well with animals?

Ivy does love animals, although I’m not going to lie, she’s far more comfy able with the domesticated kind that the creatures that roam the wasteland. All her settlements have ended up with multiple cats, dogs and brahmin (she got so many puppers in far harbour!). She never had any trouble getting along with them. She is terrified of molerats though, the mission in vault 81 which she completed alone absolutely ruined her for them. She gets so jumpy when they’re around.

11. Do they have any special diet requirements? Are they a vegetarian? Vegan? Have any allergies?

She doesn’t have any requirements or allergies, she’s just a fussy git when it comes to food in the apocalypse. Other than gumdrops/bubblegum/nuka cola, she will not touch pre-war food, and she will not eat anything raw from the wasteland.

13. What is their least favourite food?

Cram. She thinks it looked like cat food before the war, and she’s damn sure that it doesn’t age like a fine wine. If it wasn’t a guaranteed nose turn up for her before, after visiting Longneck Lukowski’s cannery she doesn’t even want to be in the same room as any kind of canned meat.

15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?

Yes! Mainly through necessity because Ivy almost always refuses pre-war food (with the exception of gumdrops and bubblegum) - you should have face when Mac offered her cram for breakfast. It’s taken some practice but she’s getting very good at turning what the wasteland has to offer into a tasty meals. She really does enjoy cooking, she finds it relaxing, especially baking bread. Mac likes to join in with the cooking too - mostly the essential role of pinching things to eat that she’s already prepped. Her companions do enjoy her cooking, and Codsworth loves that she cooks because he enjoys working on recipes with her and trying to remember pre-war stuff that they can work on. For MacCready, they’re even working on a good recipe for noodles. Just generally Mac loves her cooking, but then the guy is a bottomless pit who will eat most thing, but even Ivy can’t make mirelurk tempting for him.

4. What are their favorite things to do together?

during the blight they end up enjoying cooking together! they learn a lot about each other’s cultures and lives before becoming wardens through it, with aelwyn sharing dalish recipes and things she enjoys and alistair doing the same with fereldan food.  they also just enjoy each others company enough to enjoy doing really mundane things like collecting firewood, doing laundry, hunting... it gives them a chance to have some time away from the rest of the group. as for after the blight they cultivate a space for a garden; i like to think that alistair has green fingers from when he grew up in the chantry - tending their gardens with one of the Sisters was one of the few things he enjoyed there. meanwhile aelwyn has an interest in herbology and growing plants with medicinal properties. also... horse riding! after the move to vigil’s keep alistair teaches aelwyn how to ride a horse at some point so they do that together whenever they get the time.

1 & 2 for Temperance, please!

Heyy thank you for the asks!  These are fun ones for Temperance because the conception of the story is a little... unusual. 

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

The idea for Temperance actually came about after the events of a story I wrote for Alistair and Lucia, because I have them break up after the events of Origins.  Luce heads off to Amaranthine to do her thing, Alistair stays in Denerim to help with the Aftermath of the Blight.  Because I wasn’t satisfied with *that* angst, I decided that I wanted to have a further complication by inserting a rival love interest for Alistair, and thus Liss was born.  Originally, I intended on Liss being an incredibly annoying, unlikeable person, but I had a friend recommend that she would be much more compelling if she was likeable, and so I made her into this beautiful, kind, strong, intelligent (if messy) person.  So, when I ended up breaking her heart by having Alistair still be in love with Lucia, I felt bad and I wanted to fix it.  Nathaniel was *right there*, and I realized that a Cousland/Nathaniel pair was perfect fodder for a childhood-friends-to-lovers slowburn romance that spans across almost 2 decades.  I wrote it in the non-linear fashion that I did because I thought it was a good way to capture both the formation of their relationship, exploring the history with their families, and illustrating all of their growing pains, while also being able to capture their relationship as they come back together and realize the romantic feelings that they’ve had for a long long time.  It’s kind of hard to believe that all of this came out of me getting overly attached to an OC that I intended to be a throw-away.  

2: What scene did you first put down?

Following off of the last question, the first scene I wrote was actually their reunion in Denerim when Nathaniel accompanies Lucia as she goes to make up with Alistair, because it was written as an epilogue in that fic.  It changed a lot between the two stories, but it was the first vivid scene I had written out.

Number 7 for the author asks, for Discovery and Labyrinth?

7. Where did the title come from?

Alright, less flippant answer:

I have titles laid out for the entire series I eventually intend to complete.  Each is meant to encapsulate that particular period of the overall arc.

Discovery is fairly literally discovering the reaper threat, but it’s also about Shepard growing into her spectre role and the beginning of her relationship with Kaidan.

Labyrinth is a complication of all those things.  Shepard is mired in Cerberus, Kaidan is caught between his love for her and his duty to the Alliance, the reapers are attacking on a totally unexpected front, and everybody is trying to find their way through these challenges.

Alistair Theirin and Rosslyn Cousland (Dragon Age)

They stayed out on the cliff-side like that for what seemed like hours, wrapped up in each other, revelling in the space away from the constraints of duty that had kept them apart. They sat in the long grass and watched the mabari chase after crickets as the sun curved across the sky; Rosslyn showed him how to weave a flower crown, and though his was uneven and already falling to bits by the time it was finished, she blushed and pulled her lip between her teeth when he set it on her head.  

“That means something, you know,” she told him as she did the same with hers. 

“What?”  

A lopsided smirk, and then the gesture pressed delicately against his own mouth while a feathersoft hand had traced the line of his jaw. Alistair's stomach coiled and shot heat down to his toes as he leaned in, steadied them both with a hand on her waist and parted his lips to deepen the kiss.

#6 of the OTP questions for Alistair and Eve?

Who still gets butterflies after years of dating?

Alistair more than Evelyn in a traditional sense, at least when it comes to expressing it outwardly. He gets bashful and excited over everything, especially new life events they experience together. Evelyn finds it all endearing, but she’s always been better about internalizing her emotions. Together, they have this appearance of never really getting over their ‘honeymoon’ period, even after they settle into married life and domestic bliss.
