The Day Of Darkness
For an eternity and more he fell. Falling into the void. Cast aside by the Light. Until one day he realized that his descent had ended, and he was now floating. In this empty place, this place of calm and tranquility, at the heart of the void, he saw everything. He bore witness to the whole of creation.
He saw peace and war, love and hate, life and death, faith and despair, creation... and destruction...
He saw himself, a quintillion quintillion times over. Fighting an endless battle with his mortality... He was so insignificant. He saw that everything he had done had been meaningless... In a hundred, or a thousand years, all trace of his life was gone. An infinite number of Botan’s had lost and won the battle with the Light. And no matter the outcome, the outcome was the same, the ripples were small in comparison to the whole of the pond of creation.
What he had done, or had failed to do, had not even made the largest, or close to the largest, ripple... He had failed to make a difference...
A voice came to him there, as he despaired... It whispered of greatness... It whispered of power... It whispered of change... Lasting change... Change that would affect the entirety of creation... Everything... It told him to fall. Fall once more... Deeper into the darkness...
And so he fell... As he did he passed the lives of others he knew, others who were close to him...
He saw Akemi an infinite number of times. She lived happy, with or without him. She suffered, with or without him. She died, for or because of him... He saw her craft blades of the darkest metal, forged with one purpose in mind; to kill him...
He saw Declan, a priest. He only saw him as one person, which was strange... The snarky, sarcastic mess of a warrior... He walked battlefields far and wide, dispensing aid and devastation in equal measures... He saw him falling too, through the void... And then he was gone...
He saw the Master briefly. He simply scowled and faded away...
Soon, he felt himself fading... into the darkness... And he became one with the void...
He heard a strange laugh... He... recognized it... but his mind... was... clouded... Realization struck as he became one with the void... The voice... The laugh... The Messenger...
