Not Colorblind: a beginning
I've decided this blog is a terrible idea a hundred times. I’ve doubted everything from my writing ability, to the value (or lack thereof) of my experience, to the wisdom of opening up the can of worms that is race. Still, I have decided to press on because I think having more voices in a conversation, having more people talking about race in a critical, thoughtful manner is important, valuable even if it is done in an imperfect way.
It's important to me to make clear that this community and blog is not me going door to door offering knowledge like some sort of pretentious Girl Scout cookies. I know well how much I still need to grow and learn. This blog and community is not as a declaration or solution, but a reflection and questions, for me and for anyone willing to join me.
This community and blog come from my experience as a flawed human being, one guilty of racism. (more on this to come). It comes from a need for honesty and gentleness in our discourse around race. Too often we have one or the other. We either talk about race in polarizing, aggressive ways or avoid it at all costs. It isn’t that the anger and indignation felt by the voices in many of these conversations isn’t justified, it’s just that sometimes we speak so loudly that others can’t hear us because they’ve backed away. We can’t afford to back away. We can’t afford to continue to live in a world where we allow racism, no matter how small, to influence us and our society. We can’t afford to lose opportunities to learn from each other, can’t afford to lose the potential and talent of such a significant proportion of our population, and can’t afford to lose more black and brown lives in ways that can be avoided.
If you think about race a little, a lot, or not at all, this blog and community is for you. If you get upset or angry about race relations in this country but don’t know what to do about it, this blog and community are for you. If you feel uncomfortable talking about race, then this blog and community are for you. If you wonder why there’s all this talk about race all of the sudden, this blog and community are for you. If you don’t understand why #alllivesmatter misses the point, this blog and community are for you. If you’ve never really thought about any of this, this blog and community are for you too.
This is my goal: to prompt critical thought and discussion about race. I believe this goal is imperative to our growth as people and as a society. Join me.
Comment or shoot me an email with why you’re here, what you want to see/read in this space, or how you think we should move forward.
