Just when one superhero show comes along, so does another... Invincible is brutal and bloody at times, but it wouldn’t work without it!🩸#notforchildren #worthawatch #invincible (at Portishead, North Somerset) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNz_B2VDiHLGjOquM06GO6CXOQxjrNmP9UGJNQ0/?igshid=m63jw81of59d
Swept Away
(Author’s note: some discretion advised, not for children) The room was barely lit, but the light seemed to be emanating from everywhere at once. The candlelight combined was pitiful compared to the bare incandescent bulb hanging from the ceiling, but it was the sanguine light reflecting off the puddles of blood in the abattoir that was responsible for most of the illumination. The room, empty but fifteen minutes prior, was now crowded. David looked to his left and then to his right. His brothers and sisters lay scattered about. Hacked off limbs stacked on stone altars. The torsos lay strewn away with separated heads not far from their necks. He took the time to look in each of their eyes. Every one died with his or her eyes open. There was no fear, only defiance and indignation, casting a judgment on the one who cut their lives short. The boy opposite David was still chanting in Latin with his kris held over a book. David sighed, a painful effort given his position. The shackles bit into his flesh, adding his blood to his siblings’ on the floor. He was suspended, leaning forward, with his arms pulled out and behind him. Through gritted teeth, he spoke up above the boy’s voice. “This is a waste of time.” The boy looked at him without stopping the incantation, his eyes hungry and treacherous. “Do you realize who my Father is?” The boy continued another moment, his blade glowing redder as his spell finished. He spoke in a voice as smooth and as sharp as a razor blade. “I am doing the Father’s will.” With deliberate slowness, he walked to the first altar. Sculpted thighs lay across the altar. Stacked on top were pristine calves. Delicate arms above that were finished with hands and feet that clearly never missed their weekly spa appointment. Diana had been a beauty. David refused to look away as the boy raised his kris over the limbs and spoke a single word. In an instant, all of the skin sloughed off. With a forceful backhand, he sent the limbs flying into the corner, red blood flinging everywhere. The boy picked up a candle and placed it on top of the skin on the altar. Then, he drove his kris into the center of the candle. The entire altar engulfed in flames, filling the room with the stench of charred flesh. When the flames abated, the boy approached, removed his dagger, and moved on to the second altar. Muscular legs and toned arms were twisted together. Their owner, Yuri, had been an athlete. In fact, he was to start the home opener soccer game for his college the next day. The boy took great care scoring each limb before stepping back. With a single word, the boy dedicated his second sacrifice. The limbs twisted on their own accord, like a rag being rung out. Blood gushed from the openings. As the limbs shriveled and the muscles atrophied, the blood did not stop rushing. Overflowing the altar, the bloody waterfall cascaded over the end. The boy stepped forward and drenched his dagger in it. Turning to the third altar, the boy didn’t even both to approach it. Brian’s limbs shivered, quaked, and exploded into a cloud of dust. So much for the valedictorian. The boy was in a fever now, completely entranced in his heathen ritual. “Of skin.” Somewhere off to the side, Diana’s face cracked opened. “Of blood.” On the other side, Yuri’s nose began to bleed. “Of bone.” Brian’s face was staring directly up at David’s suspended body. The skull melted for a few seconds before solidifying in a gruesome warped state. “Of heart.” The boy stared directly into David’s eyes. One step forward. Two steps forward. He reached out with his left hand and gripped David’s shoulder. David was powerless to resist. The boy shoved him upright, muttered a prayer, and thrust the kris into David’s heart. Where it shattered. The boy was knocked back into the first altar, bits of charred flesh falling in the air like ash. David remained upright, as if the boy’s grip never left. His eyes, never once closing as the boy advanced on him and struck, blinked. Replacing his blue eyes were balls of fire. “You fool. You mess with what you don’t understand.” His voice was deeper, reverberating off the walls. Some dust fell from the ceiling. David began to rise, hovering above the floor. His chains falling with slack. Massive wings extended from his back. He closed his eyes, seemingly to focus. All light in the room extinguished, plunging it into night. Flexing his muscles in his arms and legs, he shattered his shackles. Reopening his eyes, the room was once again bathed in red. This time, it was fire. His visage was beautiful and horrifying. Vengeance incarnate, wrath unleashed. “I was promised. What was taken from me would be returned,” whimpered the boy, rising. Instead of quivering in fear, he found a cleaver and hefted it to his shoulder. Defiance, anger, and lust boiled beneath his skin. “Who do you think you are? It is we who govern life and death.” With a show of great effort, David grabbed at the air in front of him and raised his hands above his head. At once, the altars splintered, sending rocks everywhere. The hunks of meat, exsanguinated body parts, and mutilated flesh shook and chattered about. Methodically, limbs were reattached to their torsos. Before the boy’s eyes, his three sacrifices rose to stand beside their brother. Each had fire in his or her eyes. “Be reunited with your brother,” boomed David as he threw his hand forward. Though ten feet away and having begun to charge like a madman, the boy stopped in his tracks. A dagger appeared in his chest, piercing through his heart. Heat burned, radiating from the blade. Slowly, radiating outward, his flesh charred, flaking. His body smoldering, he fell to the ground screaming. Then, it stopped. Precisely two seconds later, his body broke apart. Meet Joey, unsure what they named him, but I renamed after my favourite horse. (from #Warhorse.) I truly have missed these kinds of horses, ever since the playground at Laurier removed them. #RideSallyRide! #PortDover #TheIceCreamTank #NotForChildren. (at The Ice Cream Tank)
