If he shuts his eyes and imagines Padme’s hand tucked into the crook of his elbow; Obi-Wan at his side, burnished-bronze and grinning, blood on the hem of his robes---if he ups his dose of nerve-killer, until that peeled and skinned aching fades away, until it’s almost like he is twenty and whole again---

(if he imagines the rebels, spitting with terrified defiance, wearing the pentagon of the confederacy of independent systems---if he subtracts the blood, and the screaming, then they’re just clankers---if he pictures Palpatine a little straighter, smiling paternally and haloed by the setting Coruscanti sun, instead of the dark hood---)
