What is a Monster Manager?
A Monster Manager is one of the few people in the world who can truly see monsters.
Their job is not to hunt them, but to manage them. Monster Managers are responsible for registering and tracking every known monster and supernatural entity, making sure each creature remains in the place where it belongs. Some monsters must stay bound to a specific location, like the Dame Blanche in northern France, who is required to remain there until she slowly fades away.
They act as intermediaries between the human world and the hidden monster world. In practice, their work resembles a strange mixture of a foreign office and an employment agency: they coordinate territories, monitor movements, relocate monsters when necessary, and quietly solve conflicts caused by supernatural activity. They are also responsible for keeping the existence of monsters secret. After an incident, Monster Managers “clean up after the monsters”, erasing traces, calming witnesses, and making sure no evidence reaches the public.
Monsters cannot hide from a Monster Manager. To them, every creature is always visible. To handle their work, Monster Managers are granted unusual abilities: they can briefly stop time to deal with urgent supernatural situations, and they can understand and speak every language, making communication with any monster possible. However, the job comes at a cost. Monster Managers age faster than normal humans. Their bodies slowly decay from the inside, and most of them do not live past 55.
The European headquarters of the Monster Management organization is located in Amsterdam. Its agents come from many different countries and each has a highly specialized field. Franka from Germany specializes in ghosts and sleep-paralysis hallucinations.
Noëll from France is responsible for Dame Blanche, a widespread European ghost legend, a pale woman in a white dress haunting bridges, ruins and lonely roads.
Helena is mainly responsible for mythic monsters.
Despite working in teams, the life of a Monster Manager is an isolated one, long office days filled with reports and files, interrupted only by occasional assignments that require traveling directly to the monsters themselves. And it's not allowed to talk about the monster thing with other humans.
What’s the Story about?
Monster Manager takes place when Franka is 24 years old. It follows her work as a Monster Manager, one of the people responsible for coordinating the ghosts, monsters, urban legends, sleep paralysis demons etc. of this world. There are several offices around the globe, but Franka works in the main office in Amsterdam.
The main storyline starts Spring 2025 and jumps through her past as the puzzle of her life slowly falls into place.
She grew up with her grandmother after her mother passed away at the age of 24, when Franka was only five. Because of Franka’s constant “shenanigans” with the other world, they moved around quite a bit.
As she grew older, the Sphere Office, publicly known as the Office for Marginalised Languages, contacted her and introduced her to her destined role as an interface between humans and monsters.
They are, in essence, the Foreign Office for the supernatural, though some simply call them “Monster Managers.”
Franka’s best friend is Silvia, a 21-year-old ghost who died in the early 1960s. Silvia is plagued by anger and desperation. The two met in the apartment Franka (5 years old at the time) and her grandmother moved into after her mother’s death.
During her first year in Amsterdam, Franka went to a few university parties and met Rasmus. Their situationship lasted for about a year and ended two years before the story begins. Franka ended it herself, as deeper romantic feelings started the tighten the grip on both of them. She ended it all because she saw where it would lead to, because, as she knows too well, mixing monsters and serious relationships can be dangerous. Still, she and Rasmus remain friends.
Rasmus Cousine Vanja also grew to be a friend for Franka over the years together with Noëll her non binary French coworker.
