That’s because they’re the most popular male and female characters, respectively! It’s common to ship them with basically everyone. The torches and pitchforks come from the folks that still believe that Rivamika is either incest or pedophilia, which it isn’t as of right now in the manga.

Hi guys!!! So I’ve been out of SNK lately because I’ve been sooooo busy. The last chapter I read was C80? I’m a Rivamika shipper and I just wanted to know the status of my ship, particularly, if there has been any news about their “related-ness”? They’re not related are they? Has anything been determined yet? :)

Hi, welcome back nonnie! Be careful because this blog contains spoilers from the latest SNK chapters (99). Levi and Mikasa are confirmed to be very distantly related from none less than 3 canon sources, so don’t worry! There have been discoveries regarding their Ackerman bloodline though, so watch out for chapter 94. I hope you catch up with the manga ASAP, chapter 84 is (almost every) Rivamika fan’s wet dream. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm just interested in asking, but if Rivamika did actually turn out to be incestuous. would you still ship it? I'm mostly asking because while I do ship rivamika (in a semi-platonic manner) I operate under a live and let ship policy which extends to ships that are "bad" and get a bunch of hate and spam. I'm just a bit uncomfortable saying that Rivamika is okay because it isn't those things, when I feel like other shippers that ship more problematic things also shouldn't be harassed.

Hi, so I always see people see that Isayama stated that Mikasa and Levi are "extremely distantly related" but I never see a source for that so would you mind sending me a link to that or for other things that say these two are distantly related. Not that I have doubts, but I just want to see for myself :)

I wonder why Isayama chose Mikasa and Levi not to be closely related by blood. He could have done it, they have the surnames and everything, but he didn't. I wonder if that will be important later on?

This is all very suspicious. Maybe it’s just a publishing strategy from his editor, since Levi and Mikasa are the most popular male and female characters respectively.Even if it doesn’t serve a purpose later on, at least Isayama hasn’t sunk our ship yet, and that’s remarkable in a manga like SNK - boy, did you see how many ships he’s sunk / nearly sunk last year alone? So there is still a remote chance they become canon in the end, and that’s all that matters for now.

do you think that the AOT/SNK fandom will ever stop talking about Levi and Mikasa being cousins? Frankly, I don't think Hajime has dropped any obvious hints or said something that implied relation between the two, besides the whole "Ackerman" thing.

Hi anon! Technically, they’re (distant) cousins, and it’s canon alright. Isayama didn’t drop any obvious hints about them at first, and that’s precisely how he stoked the Ackerman mystery surrounding Levi and Mikasa starting from chapter 56, when he dropped the Ackerbomb… back then, many believed they could be as close as siblings!

Yet Isayama made it very clear in chapter 65 (less than a year later) and in the databook (2016) that, despite sharing a surname, Levi and Mikasa are third cousins at the closest, which means they could be even more distantly related, and it’s very likely that they’re no more related than many people (from the main bloodline inside the walls) are.

There always will be a part of the fandom that will prefer to stay blind to these facts due to their own shipping preferences or because it makes them uncomfortable - and that’s perfectly okay, to each their own!

It just irritates me every time whenever I see comments that says Levi and Mikasa are cousins, that they are long lost siblings, Levi is (actually) Mikasa's real father and all other sh*t. Like what what??? Did you manage to pay Isayama a huge amount to make him tell you about Levi and Mikasa's relation or are you a close friend or relative of his that convinced him enough to tell you about them? And to add to their ridiculousness, they say it with such enthusiasm and confidence.

this 88th chapter hurted me :'( even though i am not an EreMika shipper, its hurt to loose your family twice :(. By the way, Levi is Mikasa third-relation cousins (or what, i dont know) . If ONLY Mikasa survived, and Levi too, would they be a 'supportive family' that was the entrance of a relationship?

From what we know of the databooks, Levi and Mikasa are third cousins at the closest, meaning they could be fourth, fifth cousins… even less related. Check out this tag.

I think if both Levi and Mikasa survive to the end of the manga there’s a high chance that they’d at least keep in touch with each other. Levi knows they’re related, he’s lonely and he did cherish his family, but he’s currently afraid to lose more loved ones to the battle against the titans / Marley. If the conflict ever comes to an end, I’m sure he’d care for Mikasa. The chances of a relationship are definitely there!
