You know what I always question? The romance movie trope where the scorned, freshly/recently dumped ex (I’ve usually witnessed it with ex-girlfriends, but feel free to prove me wrong or to blame bad representation in media) gets their revenge against their ex-lover by trashing their car, stealing their cat/other prized thing, punching them in the face, or doing some other kind of malicious stuff to them. The reason this troubles me is because every time I see it happen part of me wants to scream at the character,
“YOU CAN’T DO THAT IDIOT! ITS ILLEGAL! YOU’RE GOING TO GET ARRESTED DUMBASS!”
Because let’s be honest, in real life, if your ex vandalized your crap, you’d be on the phone with the cops! You’d get evidence, you’d take that moron to court! You’d probably get reimbursed, they might go to jail, get fined, whatever!
I wanna see that in a movie. The pissed-off ex smashing the car, the former partner filming this crap going down with one hand, on the phone with the cops with the other, just biding their time til their ex is in handcuffs. Put that stuff in movies, people. If you’re going to make a movie, you could at least make part of it realistic, because all your doing is teaching impressionable future exes that they can get revenge and get away with it!
The movie industry needs to step up and kill the unrealistic cliches. For real.
