So, after reading your answer on why Alexander becomes boring or bad after the war, do you think if he still had John's friendship, he could have been a better person?
That’s an interesting question because I do think John had a positive influence on him, showing him an entry point for idealism in upper-class society. But, I think a lot of that was lost for both of them in watching John’s ideas get beaten down again and again in execution. So, if John survived the war (because I’m sure they’d still be close) they would both probably start gravitating towards the middle as people tend to do over time.
I don’t know if Hamilton ever would’ve started initiatives towards humanitarian ideals, but I think he would’ve supported things that Laurens did. It’s also possible that Laurens might’ve introduced moral dilemmas to the things that Hamilton was doing that would’ve just made it harder for him to do what needed to be done, so that’s a fun dynamic to imagine- and an interesting thought experiment to consider the consequences of. I think they’d have a great deal of respect and love in working together, but because they could think so differently about things they might’ve butt heads in really interesting and constructive ways.
