#novel writing problems

incredible news lads...I finished the first draft of my novel!!!!!!!!!!!!!

her vital statistics for those who are interested...339 pages, 97,959 words, just a shade under 10 months for this draft.

Most importantly, done two full weeks before my self enforced deadline of my birthday, so fuck yeah.

There are SO many things I need to do with it, that I want to change, tighten up, discuss with people, but there are no gaps, there is an ending, there is conflict and a twist and worldbuilding and characters I have come to love and look forward to making even more loveable but most importantly, its under 100,000 words, which means that when I DO redraft, it probably won't get that much bigger.

and now the best news....I CAN WRITE FANFICTION AGAIN!!!!!

0kay if I reach my writing goal for my novel by the end of next week...I will start writing the Robby in Hurricane Katrina fic. So everyone if you see me writing, make sure its my novel.

When I write characters, whole and rounded, who are based on people I love or have loved, it is not dissimilar to falling in love with them all over again.  I don't know how to reconcile my heart as it sits in truth against feelings that are always buried under tissue and bone waiting to be unearthed.

And then on days like today, I have the opposite problem -- my wordcount goes up up up and I feel like I'm going to be writing forever and I'll never get to Chapter Four again.

It's like the story I'm writing is never going to end.

It's a problem.

Novel Writng Adventures

My fiction professor: so on draft 2, just think about where you can cut stuff -- get her into the time machine quicker.

Me: that makes sense.

Me, on my own over spring break, to myself: well, what if I just make the whole thing BETTER and then I won't have to make it SHORTER?

I've now added at least a thousand words onto the first two chapters. But I've probably cut a thousand from them, too.  

Hopefully everyone will be happy when I turn this draft in.

Realistically, this novel is a now run-away train.
