November 1980, Issue # 9 of Fangoria Magazine, I was 10 that December and found this on the racks at the campus store in the Student Union on the UMASS Amherst campus. I would walk over to the University after school to meet my Dad who was a PHD student in their Anthropology Department. There was a gatekeeper type at the register so I used to read through these on the rack. I will admit that on this particular occasion after attempting to pay for it and being told to put it back I stuck it down the front of my jeans and walked out of the store. I hid out, all nerves, in a service hallway in the building until the coast was clear, my ill gotten prize burning a hole in my backpack like the Ark burning that Nazi box, I could feel it ratting me out for my crime. I made a dash for Machmer hall and waited in the staff lounge until my dad was done for the day. The long walk to the P Lot in the cold darkness was the guiltiest I’ve ever felt. It wasn’t until after dinner when I was in bed that I pulled it out and read it cover to cover. It lived the rest of the week under my mattress until Saturday when I stuffed it in my back pocket and rode to meet my friend David Novosel - we went to a favorite hideout in the woods and sat shoulder to shoulder taking it all in. I didn’t confess my crime even to David but it didn’t stop me from hanging on to that albatross and reading it until it had no feathers. Guilt aside it was a fantastic treasure and finding it again all these years later has brought back the excitement (and at least a sense memory of the childhood guilt) of those heady days.
