I’m pretty sure the people declaring that New York is dead haven’t been to the Upper East Side lately. I went for a walk yesterday and the neighborhood is bustling. Outdoor cafes are full and traffic is heavy. People are walking with a spring in their step again and I’ve seen women back in their heels. I’ve heard from many friends who are returning for September. Those who left and said they will never come back will be replaced by a new group of earnest young people looking to make their mark. I recently saw photos of the city from the 70s and comparisons to that graffiti and crime ridden time period are unfounded. It looks nothing like that now and if this city can survive 9/11, it can survive anything. And don’t forget what happened to the socialite on Sex and the City who declared the New York was o-v-e-r OVER.
