It doesn't get better than this. Dear friends since grade one. Thank you @beaversnducks what an awesome adventure. Let's do it again in 2017! #runboston #np_phl #raceeverything #friendsforlife (at Boston Marathon Finish Line)
My 2nd FBRiversary
2 years ago this week was my first ever excursion with the Fishtown Beer Runners. This was not a regular Thursday night run for them, however. They were joining in with Ryan Callahan’s fantastic idea to get the Philly Running Community to show our support after the tragic events in Boston earlier that week. I met up at Philly Runner with Maggie Guterl and Tom Cobb whom I had been running with through Philly Achilles. That’s where I also met David April but I’ll tell that story another time. The plan was to run around the city and then to meet in the middle of City Hall where hundreds of us headed out down Market St towards Independence Hall. It was amazing.
From there I knew the Beer Runners were ending up at the Khyber Pass, a place I had been to many times. David assured me this was a great group so I went down by myself to join in. I grab a beer and work my way around the large crowd giving a smile and head nod to many of them. Finish that beer and order another. Still no one talking to me. Jerks. I can’t find David so I head out. Now the next Thursday I go down to David’s for the first time and am running with another Achilles buddy, Greg Cully. We run to some crappy bar in the Fairmount section... I forget the name... doesn’t matter... and this time we both get ignored by everyone. Jerks.
I can say all that now because I do feel as though I am one of them and it takes a jerk to know a jerk. I guess it was an easy fit. In all seriousness, joining in with groups like Philly Achilles, FBR, NP_PHL and so on has taken me from someone training alone to barely getting a single mile in by himself. I will certainly be writing more and more as I plan on making this dRUNk blog a regular occurrence as it seems I end up with a beer in my hand with many of these fantastic people. There are plenty of stories to catch up on and I’m sure many more stories will continue to happen. I look forward to be out and about with this wonderful group of jerks at Frankford Hall this Thursday where we will yet again be helping out a charity, DetrmiNation, and enjoying running together, drinking together and being together. I am humbled by you all and proud to be a part of this wonderful Philadelphia running community.
