OOC post: The Dawning of a New Egg
((A bit of a post on designing Ser Ignasse, AKA Ser Not-Appearing-In-This-Cutscene.
I originally decided to play Ignasse on impulse and slapped him together in about fifteen minutes, going off of @tinolqa‘s very helpful (but also very blurry) “who’s who in the Heaven’s Ward” post. Attempt #1 at Ignasse turned out like this:
...largely based off me squinting very hard at images on my phone while making him. I got the haircut right...and not much else, as I soon discovered. Talking to some of my fellow Ward brothers, I learned he’s got muttonchops! I decided to review the cutscenes where he appears and take my own screenshots. That’s about when I learned that Ignasse appears in exactly two cutscenes, and 95% of his time in those cutscenes is spent staring at the back or top of his head.
I also learned I used the wrong face model. WHOOPS. Attempt #2 at Ignasse turned out like this:
Muuuuuuch closer! The jury was still out on his having a moustache and goatee, though, because a) I as a player wasn’t terribly fond of that moustache and b) my only full frontal view of him blipped past so fast I didn’t get an actual screenshot of it (curse my slow fingers and Noudenet’s giant ass and equally giant robes). I decided to give the ‘stache a shot after seeing fanart from the Japanese half of the FFXIV fandom with it (and on squinting at my screenshots some more), and now we have Ignasse as he appears today.
Oooooh! Ahhhhh! Only took me three months to get it right! The jawline scar is, incidentally, 100% my stupid headcanon that nobody who’s spent as much time fighting dragons as the Dengeki interview says Ignasse has (translation here) gets out with an unscarred face.
