Explaining Co-operatives with Storytelling by Matt Ludt
In the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", Toula has to explain to her matriarchal aunt that her fiance is a vegetarian. Seeing a lack of appreciation in her eye, Toula explains to her aunt that they need vegetarian options at the wedding because Ian does not eat meat. After much exclamation, her aunt replies, "Oh, that's okay. I make lamb."
How do we give ourselves greater tools to effectively communicate the virtue and effectiveness of the co-operative model? The answer I believe is learning each others' stories.
Much can be said (and more will be said elsewhere in this blog) about the mighty effect that storytelling has. It is one of the most powerful ways for people to come to understanding, appreciation, and respect of ideas & movements. Consider that people tell the co-op stories in different ways -- this where the advantage comes in. Individuals are unique. Each of us have great perspective and innovation in being able to tell our co-operative stories. And all of our stories are different. Why not learn each other's stories and be better equipped to speak to a wider variety of audiences?
To start with, check out www.stories.coop. Click on this particular link to see an engaging animation about rural electric co-operatives. Cartoons about electric co-ops? Yes! Here's one that shows the innovation of co-operatives without talking about co-ops, yet its fascinating. And this one gives great co-operative history. And this presentation speaks volumes without spoken words or illustrations. And these examples were only the multimedia stories -- there's also written stories and slideshows on that website.
And, in what may be the best resource, there's a good story in every cooperator you speak to. Ask the person next to you, "Why do you co-op?" We need to tell our co-op stories and tell them more often. Inherent within that imperative is the need to tell them effectively to everyone. And that includes our matriarchal aunts.
