I'm actually in the middle of writing something that deals with him going to UVA, and I think he went there to go through ROTC bc it's one of the few colleges in Virginia that has it. My thought is that if he couldn't go through the academy to join as an officer he went through college to commission later. That's what I think maybe.

Yes, if he couldn’t attend the Naval Academy, he would have had to get a college degree elsewhere so that he could qualify to become a commissioned officer in the Navy. It would totally make sense that he would go through the NROTC program in college!

NROTC 45th Anniversary at VMI

Sept. 16, 2019—Naval ROTC celebrated 45 years at VMI on Saturday. Guest speaker, Col. Jim Williams ’66, recalled the founding of the unit in July 1974 to former and current members during a ceremony in Kilbourne Hall.
