Didn't the same thing happen with jitd? Why did it stop airing midway back then?

similar, but different. the spirealm was dropped all at once, and then whisked away 2 hours later. jitd started airing on a normal release schedule, with a tiny bit of promo, cautiously, before it got silently disappeared after 8 episodes…for 2+ years. and had to air in japan.

but, like, if you've seen it, you understand why. almost none of that can be brushed aside as "bromance," it's a love story as well as an insanely complicated crime narrative encompassing decades, two separate syndicates, and corrupt police <—and this was a sticking point as well (not to mention the, you know. child sex workers). the drama desperately tried to tone EVERYTHING down as much as they could, but how much can you really do with what a friend calls, "Police Corruption: The Novel"? also featuring, you know. an out-of-the-closet gay police captain and his younger pansexual fuerdai love interest/suspect who may also, oh yeah, be a homicidal sociopath?

my personal timeline goes something like this:

• youku did an initial cut, passed censorship, and put out 8 episodes; • the NRTA, who had signed off without looking that closely, now looked MUCH more closely and were like WAIT I'M SORRY WHAT, we didn't realize this would be popular! none of this shit is actually okay; • youku pulled it, promising to cut more/overdub more; so • they cut more and the NRTA, now aggrieved, STILL didn't like it; • at this point no one knew what to do so it was mothballed.

then SOME BRILLIANT PERSON was like oh for fuck's sake can we just, idk, SELL IT? who wants this? malaysia, thailand, do y'all want this?—and then wowow, the japanese streamer who probably got it for $5000, said hey you know what we love? we love disturbing gritty crime narratives AND bl, we invented that shit, give it to us.

these are my speculations; but not being yang xia's or priest's besties (ALAS) i will never know. yang xia made noises about DVDs today on weibo tho so! who knows! what the future holds! is more possible?

China’s Possible New Drama Laws

These were put online back in June, but I’m just seeing them now. To be honest, with all these restrictions (and these aren’t all of them, just the translated ones I saw on a couple of sites), I do wonder - what does the Chinese government want their streaming services and tv stations to air? There is a ban on genres such as "wuxia, fantasy, history, mythology, time travel, biography, palace struggles, and costume dramas.”

The ban also states: 

1. No foreign intellectual properties.

2. No tv drama remakes of older tv dramas or films. 

3. No remakes/adaptations of Chinese intellectual property. 

4. No costume dramas. 

5. No fantasy dramas.

The ban also has a large list of rules that all dramas must follow. Here are a handful:

1. No character may have had children before marriage. 

2. Including one another, the female and male lead may not have had more than three sexual partners between them. 

3. The female and male leads cannot commit crimes or do any illegal activities. 

4. Family members cannot fight over family money/companies. 

5. Out of all the medical departments, only obstetrics and gynecology dramas can be filmed. 

6. No mention of medical/healthcare disputes. 

7. School dramas: no bullying; there may be romance, but it may not go beyond innocent “puppy love”; the slacker may not fall in love with the straight A student; the slacker may improve in grades but straight A students may not regress. 

These new bans and rules were why Investiture of the Gods didn't finish airing when it was meant to and why Novoland-Eagle Flag was taken off the schedule. The remakes of Japanese comic, Prince of Tennis was briefly taken off the schedule as was a drama remake of  the film Eighteen Springs. 

Weirdly, even with all the bans and new rules (which, as far as I can tell are being enforced. Or at least were stated to be in forced for all dramas that weren’t finished filming or airing as of June 2019), I have seen a lot of news of upcoming costume and period dramas. I’ve also heard that there are several Chinese remakes of Korean dramas coming out in 2020. So, can anyone explain why companies are still making these dramas, if they may not get to air - or they will be aired, but in a heavily edited way? 

And, what does the Chinese government want their streaming services/tv stations to air? Do they not understand that costume/fantasy/wuxia/remakes are their most popular dramas in other countries? Or do they not care about selling their shows outside of the Mainland?
