it was a bit of a cliché , grace will admit that much ; returning to the scene of the crime , overdone by petty murderers . then again , what artist doesn’t stop to admire their work ? now , the reckless choice returns with a vengeance , seated in a corner booth of the diner , wearing trademark plaid . she’d gone without a disguise , and if he’d seen her then , he’d surely recognize her now . grace mentally berates herself for the foolishness , so uncharacteristic -- perhaps she should have skipped town the moment she noticed him . yet , as always , the woman she’d made herself into went to war with the child she’d fought to overcome . the child hungry for a glimpse of that other half , at the same time fueled by her ARROGANCE , curious to see if he would catch onto her .
she won’t make such a mistake now . sliding a bill across the counter , grace dismounts from the stool , quietly making for the exit . the damn bell over it jingles as she pushes at the handle . if she hadn’t given up on faith long ago , she might have prayed that he didn’t hear it over the quiet lull of the diner . instead , she pulls the door closed behind her , heading for the secluded back alley , from which she can safely fly away , unnoticed . / @ntcln
