Hi, so stoked to have a new professor! Wish you all the best. What is your stance on the origin of Klefki? Some say it evolved to look like keychains but others argue humans modeled keychains after Klefki itself.
Thank you very much for the welcome!
This is a great question and something I find myself talking about a lot actually as I get further into my research on that strange middle-space between natural evolution and artificial pokemon. There are similar debates to be had about the Klink line, the Burmy line, Galarian Weezing and many other pokemon where our actions as humans have massively affected the evolution of a certain species. Or in the case of the Voltorb line and the Grimer line, where we are the cause of their evolution at all.
In the case of Klefki though, I personally subscribe to the idea that both are true. That our invention and their adaption were concurrent. We know from archaeological evidence found in Kalosian mines that Klefki (or at least it’s close ancestor) used to live in mines. Here, they would use their distinctive horn to absorb ions from mineral ore by slotting it into gaps on the ore’s surface. When the mines depleted, due to our mining them I may add, they moved to human settlements to search for food as many species do when threatened with scarcity.
I say that it’s entirely likely that Klefki’s ancestor may have stolen and eaten ions from any number of small metal objects: needles, nails, hairclips, cutlery (at our last discussion of this topic, myself and several other collegues agreed that Spoonsby would have made an excellent pokemon too). Of course, locks would have been ideal as they were widespread, easy to access and not usually closely guarded. It would have simply been a matter of finding a keyhole that the Klefki’s horn could fit into.
Now for humans, there is suddenly a pokemon about that steals keys and that means humans are going to end up making better locks and better locks means more types of keys to have to mimic. Which is the obvious answer, I think at least, as to why they steal keys in the first place: research. They can look at the key and know if their horn will fit inside the lock it belongs to.
Klefki re-enters the consciousness as a mischievous key-stealer, we become more stringent in keep them away from our keys and then Klefki has to adapt to the fact that humans are growing wiser to it’s tricks. So, it borrows further from our invention, to be less conspicuous to us and to be better at carrying keys by imitating a keyring.
You can see then that it’s a cycle of adaption and it’s a dance we do with a lot of other pokemon. Nowadays, I know a lot of people who have a Klefki to help them in the workplace as they are great for carrying little memos and are relatively easy to look after if you train them well. It’s entirely likely that they may change again to suit an office life.
It’s a fascinating aspect of our ecosystems and culture. Some people have asked me those kinds of questions in order to find a torchic-or-egg sort of answer and I always try to explain that the truth is never that simple but that it’s complications are endlessly fascinating.
Welcome back! I have been a big fan for such a long time and was so sad when you stopped posting T T You are so ridiculously creative it doesn't even make sense, keep up the amazing work.
aw ty!!! appreciated <3
Is there any reason behind Sweetilt's ability Serene Grace?
You know i really have no idea? I think i wasn’t really paying attention to the ability I gave it because really I only wanted to give it a throw away ability so that Stiltotem got Long Reach lol
Ya rat bois legit look like criminals well done!
Big crimes for big bois! C:<
Hi again! Professor, I'm so curious about this new Steelix variant you talked about! If you have encountered a specimen, can you tell úa more?
Ah sadly, I cant share much about it at the moment. It was my predecessor's primary research project, not mine.
I do intend on taking it over but the lab was left in a state and I need to sort a lot of paperwork and do some repairs before I can work here reliably.
I can tell you that my predecessor did suspect that it could be a legitimate regional variant but she had yet to confirm it completely. Her notes mentioned that it generates a pretty potent toxin in its body, expelling it through spines on its body.
I did also find one of her sketches of it. Apologies for the low quality, the lab's current scanner is ancient.
Thank you for showing interest though, it keeps me motivated.
I LOVE it that you literally went for a literally ashy Greninja
Thank you so much! I kinda felt like the galaxy brain meme and I wasn’t sure if everyone was gonna think I was biggest idiot or a smart guy and people ended up liking it well enough so I’m pleased. c:
Is the skull on Mandibuzz from a Bouffalant? I'm curious
Yep, Madibuzz is wearing Bouffalant bones and Vullaby is wearing a Krokorok a skull. c:
