GALTx eNews: Early Giving Is Open!

Early giving for North Texas Giving Day is now open! North Texas Giving Day is always one of GALT’s biggest fundraisers. We count on a successful day to help pay the bills for the hounds that come to us in need of veterinary care all year long. To help us make the most of the event, our North Texas Giving Day Matching Fund Heroes are matching up to $15,000 in donations made by midnight on September 21, 2023.  

Last year, we shared with you about the hounds coming to us from a landfill who were in dire need of help. Thanks to your gifts, they received the care they needed and are now finding their forever homes. Since then, we have welcomed several more hounds needing extensive medical care including Wylie, Acme, Beep, and Cliff, who came from an Oklahoma shelter in rough shape. Sadly, Wylie passed away in our loving care. Acme and Cliff are, however, on the road to recovery, and Beep has already found his forever home! Recently, we also welcomed Twyla and Jenny to our Injured Reserve family. Twyla lived the stray life for far too long. She came to us severely underweight and with a host of medical issues including a bad case of mange. She has already regained enough strength to receive her heartworm treatment and is on the road to recovery. Jenny came to us with a broken leg requiring expensive surgery. She is now resting quietly and healing in a foster home. 

We don’t know who will come to us next. Whatever the circumstances, we are committed to being here for the next hounds in need so that they can have happy endings too. We need your North Texas Giving Day gifts to remain ready. 

In addition to qualifying for matching, gifts made on the North Texas Giving Day website are eligible for monetary awards from the program organizers, so we hope you’ll give there. But if you prefer to give on our website, your gifts to the Dr. E. Kelly Nitsche Veterinary Care Fund will also qualify for the matching through September 21, 2023.

GALTx eNews: Let's Make Tomorrow A Better Day!

North Texas Giving Day is coming up fast on September 19th, from 6:00 am to midnight, central time! We are pleased to once again be joining forces with Communities Foundation of Texas on this important day of giving to help the hounds and we stand ready with up to $20,000 in matching funds to make your donations go twice as far. Your donations can also win bonuses and prizes benefiting GALT to maximize your giving. But you don't have to wait until September 19th - scheduled giving starts Monday, September 9th! Bookmark this link now so that you can get up and give starting on Monday to help us take full advantage of this great on line event.

The greyhound racing industry is changing quickly. Your donations and securing the matching funds is more critical than ever. To meet the increased adoption needs of Greyhounds coming off the tracks in Florida, we have leased a kennel facility that can house up to 88 hounds while they await foster homes. Our lease payments, utilities, food, maintenance and other expenses can run in excess of $8,500 per month. Our medical expenses are also rising as we accept an increasing number of senior hounds and puppies like Blaze and his family and Huck who have expensive health issues. Our hound related expenses in second quarter of this year averaged more than $1,000 per day, excluding our unexpected bills for emergencies like Rita's Xylitol poisoning and Lyle's surgery to remove a benign tumor from his small intestine. And as you'll see below, strays continue to arrive with health issues related to their rough living.

GALTx eNews:  North Texas Giving Day is Here!

North Texas Giving Day (NTGD) is practically here! It's next Thursday, September 14th, 2017, from 6:00 am to midnight! New this year, you can schedule your donations in advance on our NTGD page whenever it is convenient for you. 

We are especially excited about NTGD this year because an anonymous donor will match donations made at our NTGD page up to $15,000! This generous matching gift will help a lot of hounds and, combined with your generous donations, can cover our medical and boarding expenses for the Mobile 30!  

With our expenses averaging nearly $1,000 a day, NTGD is always an important part of GALT's annual fundraising. Last year, supporters like you donated over $8,000 to GALT, setting a new record. We are hopeful that you will help us break that record this year so that we can earn the entire $15,000 in matching funds!   We know that you have many giving choices this year, but hope you will continue to help retired greyhounds find forever homes, regardless of their medical needs, as you have in the past! GALTx eNews: Calling All North Texas Giving Day Heroes!

Early giving for North Texas Giving Day is open and, thanks to our 2024 NTGD Matching Fund Heroes, gifts made through September 19, 2024, on the North Texas Giving Day website will be matched up to $10,000! Your matched gifts will go twice as far to help us finance the medical needs of our incoming hounds like Reba, who required $2,600 in dental work when she arrived. 

Meet our 2024 NTGD Matching Fund Heroes:

In 2018, Rick and Linda Vayo founded the Amanda and Emmet Golden Years Fund in honor of their senior hounds, Amanda and Emmett, who had crossed the rainbow bridge. Like many, the Vayos believe that adopting a senior greyhound is the best kept secret in the greyhound world. They couldn’t think of a better way to honor the memory of Amanda and Emmet than by continuing to support other senior greyhounds as 2024 NTGD Matching Fund Heroes.

Biscuit and Gravy were surrendered to GALT as seniors in 2014 when their family suffered an unfortunate change of circumstances. Their story broke Susan Smith and Wayne Axtell's hearts. They quickly decided to adopt them together so that the hounds could remain happy in their golden years. Biscuit and Gravy have since crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Susan and Wayne honor their memory by joining our 2024 NTGD Matching Fund Heroes.

Lori and Bill Elmer have adopted 20 hounds in the past 32 years. While they have previously honored many of their hounds, this year they recognize several GALT foster families who have helped bring joy to so many in recent years:

Julie & Rick Waller have fostered 101 hounds so far, including a brief foster vacation for the Elmers’ newest pup, Pixie;

Jennifer & Kevin Cooper’s 20 foster hounds have included two more Elmer hounds, Marcus and Donnie;

Theresa Barnett has fostered 18 hounds, including precious Bernadette, who sadly passed away less than eight months after her adoption; and

Kathryn LoRosso has fostered seven hounds, including the Elmers’ first GALT hound, Sage. 

Bill and Lori honor all the GALT foster parents by joining our 2024 NTGD Matching Fund Heroes, and especially appreciate those that fostered their four GALT hounds (pictured).
