Ontario, New York announce nuclear energy agreement | CBC News

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a memorandum of understanding in Buffalo Friday. Under the agreement,

Ontario has signed a memorandum of understanding with New York to help the state develop nuclear technologies to meet growing energy demand and strengthen reliability and decarbonization in both jurisdictions. The new memorandum of understanding (MOU) establishes a deal between New York Power Authority (NYPA) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to collaborate on advancing nuclear energy technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs) — which Ontario is currently building — and large-scale nuclear facilities, the province said in a release. Announcing the agreement with New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a news conference in Buffalo Friday, Ford said Ontario currently has enough nuclear electricity to power 16 million homes, and more will be coming online in the coming years.

UK Security Adviser Attended US-Iran Talks and Judged Deal Was Within Reach

Jonathan Powell thought Tehran's 'surprising' offer on its nuclear programme could prevent rush to war, sources say.

Britain's national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, attended the final talks between the US and Iran and judged that the offer made by Tehran on its nuclear programme was significant enough to prevent a rush to war, the Guardian can reveal.

Powell thought progress had been made in Geneva in late February and that the deal proposed by Iran was "surprising", according to sources.

Two days after the talks ended, and after a date had been agreed for a further round of technical talks in Vienna, the US and Israel launched the attack on Iran.

Powell's presence at the talks, and his close knowledge of how they were progressing, was confirmed by three sources....

Powell's attendance at the Geneva talks, as well as at a previous set of meetings earlier in the month in the Swiss city, helps in part to explain the UK government's reluctance to back the US attack on Iran, a reluctance that has put the UK-US relationship under unprecedented strain.

The UK saw no compelling evidence of an imminent threat of an Iranian missile attack on Europe, or of Iran securing a nuclear weapon....

Instead the UK regarded the attack as unlawful and premature...

One Gulf diplomat with knowledge of the talks said: "We regarded Witkoff and Kushner as Israeli assets that dragged a president into a war he wants to get out of."

Iran Already Made A Nuclear Deal, Don't Ask Tehran to Meet New Demands

Iran's foreign minister warns Washington not to make new demands.

The new administration in Washington has a fundamental choice to make. It can embrace the failed policies of the Trump administration and continue down the path of disdain for international cooperation and international law -- a contempt powerfully evident in the United States' decision in 2018 to unilaterally withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, that had been signed by Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union just three years earlier. Or the new administration can shed the failed assumptions of the past and seek to promote peace and comity in the region.

U.S. President Joe Biden can choose a better path by ending Trump's failed policy of "maximum pressure" and returning to the deal his predecessor abandoned. If he does, Iran will likewise return to full implementation of our commitments under the nuclear deal. But if Washington instead insists on extracting concessions, then this opportunity will be lost.

Iran today announced that its stockpile of low enriched uranium now exceeds the 300 kilogram of enriched uranium hexafluoride (UF6) level set out as a limit in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. But Iran does that within the frame of the JCPOA. It is not breaching it. Article 26 of the joint plan states that the U.S. will refrain from reimposing sanctions and that Iran will react in case that happens... On June 17 Iran announced that it would exceed the stockpile limit by June 27. It took a few days longer but it now happened. The JCPOA clearly states that Iran would take this step if and when the U.S. breaches the agreement by imposing new sanctions. That Iran is now exceeding one of the limits JCPOA sets out is not in breach of the agreement but in adherence to its letters. A 'diplomatic editor' who does not understand that should seek a different profession.

The real nuclear crisis facing the United States is not that of an Iranian regime threatening a nuclear conflict. Rather, it's a U.S. government policy that rejects the 2015 compromise and seeks to provoke Iran even further. Yet that's not the way The New York Times and other news media have covered the story.

Iran and the EU: Divorce Proceedings Underway

As promised, Iran is partially pulling out of the JCPOA nuclear deal. This can be called a "phase one withdrawal" since other phases are expected to follow in the coming months. The basis for this act is not limited to the actions of US President Donald Trump – who shredded the JCPOA deal unilaterally – but also to the failure of the European signatories (i.e. France, the UK and Germany) to offer any incentives for Iran to comply with the deal. This leaves the entire JCPOA agreement in a kind of limbo, now that western leaders have shown themselves untrustworthy to honour any future deals in the wake of Trump's abdication. The absence of necessary trust and partnership seems to preclude any future pacts between nations, notably between the US, Europe and Middle Eastern countries.
