North American XB-70 Valkyrie — America’s Cold War Supersonic Speed Bomber

The article "North American XB-70 Valkyrie — America’s Cold War Supersonic Speed Bomber" by Friedrich Seiltgen, published on The Armory Life, discusses the history and development of the North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie, a planned supersonic strategic bomber for the United States Air Force. Intended to replace the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress and the Convair B-58 Hustler, the Valkyrie was designed during the Cold War to fly faster and higher, evading interceptor aircraft. The program, initiated in the mid-1950s, was ultimately canceled in 1961 due to advancements in Soviet surface-to-air missile technology and the rise of cost-effective Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). The article highlights the Valkyrie's ambitious design goals, including a proposed cruising speed of Mach 3 and an operational altitude of 70,000-75,000 feet. Despite the cancellation, two prototypes were built, contributing valuable data on supersonic flight, aerodynamics, and airplane propulsion. The Valkyrie program also faced a tragic incident in 1966 involving a collision with an F-104 Starfighter during a photo shoot, leading to the destruction of one prototype. The surviving XB-70 is now displayed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

A foreshadowing

I was reading up on military strategy for work, and one of the books I was going through was 'The Direction of War' by Huw Strachan, a British military thinker. This book was written pre-indyref, and went into what might happen with the British Nuclear Deterrent should Scotland gain independence:

"The SNP has consistently opposed British posession of nuclear weapons. For far too long the reaction of the MoD was to ignore this 'political' problem. It can no longer do so: the British nuclear deterrent force is based at Faslane on the Clyde and it's storage facilities are at Coulport, also in Scotland."

So in my fics, in the post-brexit wasteland, when Scotland secedes, the English are going to be wanting their nukes back. And it'll get geopolitically messy.

Stealthy….

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (August 15, 2018) -- Three United States Air Force B-2 Spirit “Stealth” bombers, deployed from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, land at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

B-2s regularly rotate through the Indo-Pacific region to conduct routine air operations....which integrate capabilities with key allies and demonstrate U.S. commitment to peace and stability in the vast region.

These operations are in support of the U.S. Strategic Command’s Bomber Task Force deployment.

The bomber can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons....such as eighty 500 lb (230 kg)-class (Mk 82) Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Global Positioning System-guided bombs....or sixteen 2,400 lb (1,100 kg) B83 nuclear bombs. (Each nuclear bomb yields roughly 75 times the power of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945, bringing an abrupt and decisive end to World War II.)

Note these aircraft are so “stealthy” they almost disappear into the tarmac....not to mention their reduced radar signature, bordering on near-invisibility to radar detection, while in the air.

P.S. Actually yes: Europe needs a military industry, nuclear deterrent and military forces that doesn't rely on the US...!!!

Are we depending too much on military might?  A response to Symon Hill on Keir Starmer’s increase of the Defence Budget

Symon Hill argues in Premier Christianity that Kier Starme ris wrong to spend more on defence.  His argument is two-fold.  First, he argues that a strong military defence does not work as a deterrent and secondly that it is wrong to do this because it means that we are putting our trust in military forces instead of in God.  I don’t believe that either argument stands up and in fact his article…
