#OnThisDay The discovery of radioactive element radium was announced by Pierre and Marie Curie. Five days before their announcement to the French Academy of Sciences, the Curies were experimenting with pitchblende, a common uranium-rich mineral ore. After extracting refined uranium from the mineral, they found that the remaining materials were still radioactive. This suggested that there was another, even more radioactive element mixed in with the ore. In order to get a sample of the suspected element, Marie Curie dissolved, filtered and repeatedly crystallized nearly three tonnes of pitchblende between 1899 and 1902, which produced about 0.1 gram of what turned out to be radium. This discovery, along with the discovery of the element polonium, earned Marie her second Nobel Prize in 1911, which she shared with Pierre.
Radium has many practical applications. For example, its isotopes are used in radiotherapy, especially for targeting and destroying bone cancer cells. A gaseous form of radium also helps scientists study how pollutants move through the atmosphere, which can help them better understand greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
