talking Unitarian paladins with tumblr user @nudistfeline
Feline: The tradeoff for your power is that you will be filled with empathy at all times and unable to change a lightbulb without holding a committee meeting.
me: "halt, evil-doer (although evil is a subjective label that others people and i understand that you are still deserving of worth and compassion)! put down your weapon or i shall raise my Rod of Reasoned Debate!"
Feline: "And I shall chastise you firmly with the teachings of the Golden Rule!"
me: "tremble before the awesome might of my Pete Seeger sing-alongs! and then let's take a brief break for a flagon or two of coffee"
Feline: "Decaf and a selection of teas are available for all palates."
"I must collect the expended spell scrolls for the recycling program."
me: "not to rush your decision-making here, goblin soldier, but i do have a roundtable discussion with a wizard, a shaman, and a necromancer in three hours"
Feline: "Although we could use another panelist if you have any interest in the ethics of resurrection?"
"Some book-learnt folklorists have recently taken to saying there were few genuine cowboy folk songs, that most so-called cowboy songs were the work of educated poets or were mere imitations of popular songs…many cowboy songs are reworkings of older ballads… To my mind these critics have merely pointed to the fact that the West was a cultural melting pot…That this evocative and self-consistent body of oral literature could have been created in thirty or forty years (for the open range period lasted only from 1865 to 1900) and under constantly changing conditions, is a marvelous example of how quickly a folk culture can grow up when it is needed."
—Alan Lomax, Folk Songs of America, 1960
Having a lot of feelings right now about folk music and remix culture and American-ness right now, but most especially "how quickly a folk culture can grow up when it is needed"
LIFE HACK
1. befriend a very smart person
2. ask them a bunch of questions
3. repeat
Coming up on the one-year anniversary of that time my friends convinced me to break my lease instead of continuing to live with a Craigslist roommate who made me feel unsafe.
Friendly reminder: if someone ever physically intimidates you until you're cowering against your fridge, then asks for a hug, then gets visibly angry when you stammer out a no thanks, you owe this person absolutely nothing. Burn your bridges and get the hell out of Dodge.
Don't wait for panic attacks and stolen food and finding out he's been in your room while you were at work.
It's okay to make your mental health a higher priority than a stranger's feelings.
So Feline has promised me a Magic Schoolbus/Welcome to Night Vale crossover fic, which I am very excited for, but for the time being the very concept is birthday present enough. IS MISS FRIZZLE FROM NIGHT VALE THIS EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.
In the meantime, something to ponder: what do the permission slips for all these Magic Schoolbus fieldtrips look like? And how do the parents keep signing them?
Oh hey we're gonna shrink your kids real small and pass them though the human intestines, that alright with you? Also, pack a sack lunch, there's probably not gonna be food available. Undigested food, I mean.
"...cool, where's my pen?"
I am all about making learning fun, but frankly it feels a little negligent.
ATTENTION BEDLAM, VICE, AND FELINE:
Google hangout party this Monday night. Bring the wine and your most ridiculous tendencies.
Tomorrow I get internet in the place where I live again and it is time to pop the freaking cork.
Might be going to Jewish hell
