Painted using a photo reference I don’t have anymore, or perhaps it’s a composite of photo and made up or perhaps all just remembered and with no figure drawing training. Painted during the only class at ubc in the early 90s where we were allowed to draw and paint figures. So far I’d done that plenty in the the printmaking side of things with the awesome Barbara Sunger. But I’d just had to drop out of the 4th year drawing class because the prof “couldn’t encourage rendering with a pencil.“ it could be installations or piles of sand or snow or chairs or even photocopies. (Ask if you want to see a comic about that and universe willing I will try.) My hopes went up when this prof talked about canvasses and paint and brushes. Pencils ok? I asked. He would probably have suggested charcoal, but I made this part up. You get the point. I painted this from a photo or a slide I no longer have. one of the very few I’d taken during my 2 years in Nigeria. Its a terrible painting for lots of reasons but looking back I’m struck by how much more terrible it could have been and how it had my heart in it. I threw it out in the 2nd or 3rd move after that in one of those “objects and sketchbooks and journals are just objects don’t get sentimental just get rid of that clutter” imposter controlled moods. Just recently I came across this photo of it in an unsorted box from two moves ago. I realized I had continued to think about Fixing Nigeria through this motorcycle repair scene and painted a larger version years later. I’ll post that one next. #fixingnigeria #motorcyclerepair #baturia #nigerianmotorcyclerepair #numannigeria https://www.instagram.com/p/CW2JNykLoSW/?utm_medium=tumblr
