Siren’s Song

This is a story I wrote for @nurseryheart‘s Arts and Crafts block today! We had to make something with a mythical creature, and I chose sirens! Enjoy!

I wake up to the early morning light streaming through the water outside. I swim out and surface next to my small island-which is no more than a few rocks, really-and see that, in the distance, a ship is approaching. I grin. There's still enough time to warn them.

You see, I live a good distance away from my sisters, in front of their islands. My brothers and I are never noted in the humans' tales, or books. To the land dwellers, we all want one thing: destruction of their ships, and humans to feed on.

I rise out of the water and my clothes cling to my skin. They're old; from a sailor on a ship that had long ago ignored the warnings of my brothers and I and sailed into the trap of my sisters. But they do their job well.

My eyes, as blue as the ocean around me, alight on the ship in the distance. I take a deep breath in and start to sing, a soft tenor floating through the air. Around me, my brothers start to surface as they hear my voice. One by one, they all join the chorus, harmonizing and joining in the melody, until a choir rises just above the ocean's waves.

The ship begins to turn away, and my brothers and I continue the song until they are long gone. I sigh, my brown hair falling into my face, and with a hand tanned enough to resemble a fawn's fur, I brush it out of my face. I turn to my youngest brother, who is sitting on his own pile of rocks not 4 meters away, and call out, "Your singing was amazing today, Alaric!"

Alaric offers my a toothy grin and says, "I'm getting better every day thanks to you, Timothy!"

I grin at him and together we keep a lookout for any more ships. The days could go by slow, and some of my brothers say as much, but there's never a dull moment when Alaric and I are together. Whether we're skipping rocks, cracking jokes, or singing together to ward off ships, the two of us can make a game out of anything, and before I know it, the day is over without a single ship coming too close to us.

My other brothers, the night watch, start to surface and all of us day-singers slip into the water to get a good night's rest. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?
