yall please get in contact with upperclassmen who are in the same major/field of study as you if you can. i was on the verge of a total panic attack bc i saw all the reading and shit that i had to do and i started hyperventilating, verge of tears, etc, and the class hasn’t even started!!! i wanted to talk to my parents/guy im seeing but instead i decided to talk to one of the upperclassmen! bc i dont wanna scare my family away lmaooo

best. decision. i. ever. made. she calmed me down, gave me a test bank for the tests for the entire semester’s exams, and told me exactly how to study and get through it. she even told me to call her after my first day, my first exam, first clinical, stuff like that. i feel like im gonna make it through bc of her tbh.

Since it's been a while since I have been around, let's talk about something important.

Burn out. This hit me so hard. Even my days off no longer felt like days off, if I was lucky to have one. My employer worked me so hard, I was constantly surrounded by death.

Burn out doesn't just happen from caregiver fatigue, it happens when your promised days off don't happen, it happens when you are working your ass off constantly but you're the glue holding your team together.

It happens when you make phone calls to your bosses in the middle of a fucking emergency and their sleep is more important than doing their fucking job.

It happens when your coworkers can't get ahold of your bosses and you have to come in unpaid because the people who make the money to do that fucking shit don't come in, and if you don't take care of it your shift is going to be a shit show.

Burn out happens when you are constantly around abuse and neglect and no matter how many times you report it your bosses do not give a fuck.

If you are a director for a care home, if you're a charge nurse, if you're anything involved in the fucking medical field read this.

Stop working your best workers to death, stop expecting them to constantly come in on their days off when you are not wanting to cover any shifts. Pick up your fucking phones.

Listen to the reports of abuse and neglect instead of acting shocked when your workers decide to whistle blow, because you can't pull your head out of your ass.

Pandemic aside, everyone likes to pretend over working of workers never happened, and blind eyes were turned.

I hope to God your fucking eyes are opened the fuck up now.

I need some help

SO this is like the 3rd time I am making this post (I deleted the others), but I REALLY need help. I need to pay my college bill in 3 days and I can’t get a loan. I don’t want to get into the full details here, so here is a link to my reddit page about:

The tl;dr of it all is that my financial aid officer has been screwing me over for weeks with constant changes to what I owe. The reason why she kept changing it is because I asked her if I could remove my father-in-law from my FASFA since he has been unemployed since last March and has been recently diagnosed with cancer. I’ve tried to get a loan but can’t without a cosigner. I need $3,500. 

PLEASE, if anyone can help, even just a little that would mean the world.

2nd August 2020

spent the past few days in hospital from pleuritic chest pain (chest pain caused by shortness of breath) and a blood clot eek!

had the opportunity to complete and submit my first research paper, and complete 1 attempt of a numeracy quiz.

hopefully getting discharged tomorrow, and then straight to uni for practical nursing labs.

As this semester is coming to an end, I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I want for my future. Although learning this corona season was not what we are all used to, I think everyone did an amazing job adjusting and that’s something to be proud of! Shoutout to everyone that helped me out this semester! I love and appreciate every single one of y’all! I’m praying for everyone to continue to work hard and finish stronger than ever 🙏🏾💛💙

Unpopular opinion maybe?

When every single person in your class is going through a mental health crisis and every other person in your major, across different schools and even decades, agrees that the program is hell... I think that's a sign of a systemic problem?? Like, maybe learning how to save lives shouldn't make you want to kill yourself? Maybe we should, idk, try to improve things? Just a thought.

I know "it gets better after you graduate" but I just dont see how it being this bad in the first place is in any way acceptable.

Parathyroid Dysfunction

Hi, wow. I meant to do this more often, but I got distracted. Oops. Anyway! 

Let’s start on what the parathyroid is and what it does. 

This little gland here regulates the calcium and phosphorus balance in your body. Increased parathormone elevates blood calcium by increasing calcium absorption from the kidney, intestine, and bone while also lowering phosphorus levels. This means that these two electrolytes are inversely correlated. 

On to the fun part: dysfunction.

Hypoparathyroidism

Hyposecretion of parathormone (PTH) causes hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia.

Causes:

Destruction of parathyroid glands (i.e., parathyroidectomy)

Renal failure

Autoimmune complications

Manifestations: 

Muscle cramps -- typically in the abdomen and extremities

Anxiety

Positive Trousseau’s or Chvostek’s sign 

Tetany

Nursing Interventions:

Monitor for signs and symptoms of hypocalcemia and tetany

S/S of hypocalcemia

numbness and/or tingling of the extremities

muscle cramps/spasms

seizures

facial twitching

muscle weakness

lightheadedness

slow heart rate 

Seizure precautions

Airway protection -- intubate with tetany

Calcium-gluconate and vitamin D2

Hyperparathyroidism

Hypersecretion of PTH causes hypercalcemia and hypophosphatemia.

Causes:

Primary

noncancerous growth -- adenoma

cancerous growth

Secondary

Renal failure

hypocalcemia -- overworked parathyroid

phosphorus rentention

Manifestations:

Fatigue

Muscle weakness

Skeletal pain/tenderness

Constipation

Bone Deformities

Renal Stones -- due to frequent urination

Pathological fractures

Anorexia/Nausea/Vomiting

Cardiac dysrhythmias

Interventions:

Monitor vital signs and EKG

Strict I&Os

Skeletal pain management

Avoid injury

Parathyroidectomy care

Encourage movement

Patient education
