Normal people's bad day at work: my stapler is broken, I missed a deadline, and spilled my coffee down my shirt Nurse's bad day at work: I got to work early ready for a good day and a 5 year old with a gunshot wound to the head came in

I’m utterly exhausted. Not just from today. From the past few days of clinicals and basically today just broke me. I never really thought of what I would do when one of my patients died. Maybe I will cry. Maybe I won’t for the sake of keeping it together for the 3 other patients that also need me. 

But literally nothing prepares you for when the family is calling you to come in. Everyone a mess. His eyes rolling to the back of his head while his body turned from blue to gray. And you can’t do anything because he’s DNR so you just kind of stand and watch his sats drop. Waiting for respiratory to come in. But it’s not like they can do anything either when your patient has agonal breathing aka the breath of death. It’s kind of like watching a fish out of water trying to breathe but more painful. 

And I know it’s not my fault. My job is to keep the patient alive for one more shift, but I would never blame myself if I had a deteriorating 80 something who has congestive heart failure and can’t even get out of bed without being winded. Death would be on my list of expectations. 

But he was doing so well. 5 hours earlier he was joking with his whole family. Taking pictures. Actually getting up with physical therapy and making his damn best effort to eat that pudding he promised the aide because she reminded him of his granddaughter. He had a great fucking day and thanked me every time before I left the room. How could a man so gracious and understanding of the people who are trying to help him drop like that. like no you can’t do that. you can’t fucking do that. like what the fuck

WHAT THE FUCK. whtat hte mother fucki. 

My mom always tells me to pray for every person I take care of and I prayed so hard. Not even for him to make it through the night but for him to at least make it until the rest of his family arrived. 

And it was a fucking mess. I’m a fucking mess. I couldn’t even talk to my nurse to get her to sign my hours. She did the one thing that I can’t fucking stand because it’s a trigger to the dam full of tears I’m trying to hold. Don’t ask me if I’m okay. Because if I can’t even speak, no. I’m not fucking okay. And I have no more strength to even lie about being okay. And you just sapped the little bit of strength I had left to hold on to my tears. But she’s a fucking saint and hugged me. and my clinical mates hugged me. and they had a rough day today and cried earlier too so we’re all sobbing messes. 

and i can’t believe i’ve come this far and feel so low. i just need to glue myself together to go back on monday but i’m so fucking done. i need like a week break. 

im starving. my body hurts. and i’m just gonna take a double shot to sleep this shit off.
