Today I participated in the weekly Saturday vigil & show of solidarity at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. I hesitate to even call it by its official name--”detention center” obfuscates the fact that it’s literally a prison--but I will for simplicity’s sake. 

The first picture in this set, with scenic Mount Rainier in the background, shows a green hill behind the lot where detainees are brought in (and very occasionally let out). It’s no ordinary hill, though: the NWDC is built on a Superfund site, and the building sits on and adjacent to a toxic waste dump with a grassy exterior. (Oh, remember that New Yorker piece from 2015 about the massive earthquake/tsunami combo that we’re way overdue for here in the PNW? Did you know that Rainier is an active volcano that could blow any day and destroy life as we know it in this region? The NWDC has evacuation plans for its employees and guards in the event of these emergencies. They don’t have one for detainees.) This is the kind of place we’re housing people who’ve been classified as illegal by administrations of both parties, which is an important reminder, I think.

Speaking of bipartisanship: GEO Group, the private prison company with the exclusive contract to “house” detainees at NWDC to the tune of ~$180 profit per person per day, made donations to both Donald Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s presidential bids. The private prison lobby has also donated to both of our progressive Democratic senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, who are paid handsomely by the pharmaceutical lobby as well. (I railed on a couple of months ago about how “progressive” is a meaningless word. I bet few places can hold a candle to Seattle when it comes to that farce of a label.)

While we held our vigil outside, passing out snacks to family members visiting detainees, a fire truck and ambulance screamed past, pulling into the back lot. One of the undocumented leaders of the Northwest Detention Center Resistance told us that’s a regular occurrence during Saturday vigils--detainees who experience medical emergencies are bundled into ambulances under guard; finding out where they’ve been taken or why is a practical impossibility, according to the NWDC Resistance leaders. 

ICE is a terrorist organization operating at the intersection of capitalist greed and xenophobic white supremacy. In a just world the people doing the brutalizing of their fellow human beings and the people soaking up blood money through domestic war profiteering would be the ones behind bars in windowless concrete blocks floating on toxic waste. But we don’t live in a just world, we live in this one, and in this world, the only power most of us have is the kind we build with other people. Our side doesn’t have money or piggish neo-fascists armed to the teeth and handsomely paid. Our side is beholden to no interest; our side is beholden to all of mankind. 

Those of us with privilege can use it to fight for those without it. For what are we born, if not that?

These local activists have been harassed and assaulted by Tacoma police and racists groups. Their first amendment rights have been trampled by the city.
