Useful Boy
Two figures haunt the alley outside Hamburger Sam’s. One, hunkered over his own knees, staring at the asphalt as he speaks, gestures, rakes a trembling hand through his dark hair. The other stood over him in a black greatcoat too large for his shoulders yet too well-tailored to be a charitable castoff. When the boy crouched at his feet finishes talking, the haunted young man in his greatcoat says, “I can take it from you.” He draws on the spiced, herbal cigarette the boy handed him. He does it solely for the warmth it leaves at the back of his throat; the mullein will do nothing to ward him away. Light from the cherry hangs in his eyes for seconds after he passes the little black cigarette back. “What, like, hypnosis? I’ve tried hypnosis,” he huffs. “It’s useless."

I asked myself "what would it take to get Armand to willingly sacrifice his eye for Maharet's benefit in a fit of selfless devotion" and the answer was "honestly not much, given his addiction to cults". This fic will be my effort to find out just how easy it is for a compassionate force of nature to get under Armand's skin, with little sojourns to visit the Devil's Minions along the way because I'm nothing if not self-indulgent.

Haley looked at the older pair, her eyes narrowing. “Yes,” she said, and had the satisfaction of seeing Lewis’ eyes widen to match Marnie’s. “And I should tell everyone!” she snapped. Lewis let out a sound that was somewhere between a sob and a strangled howl. “I can’t believe you would do that! You’re terrible!” “Terrible?!?” Haley snapped. “Listen to yourself! It’s not a secret that you two are hooking up!”
