Maggie knew that life for her and her family on the farm wouldn’t last forever. The apocalypse destroyed everything around them and her and her family watched as their friends and family died around them. They were able to continue their lives on the farm for a few months after the apocalypse began, but things slowly started to change when Walkers found their way on their land. Annette Greene, Maggie’s step-mother, ended up getting bit and that ultimately started the rest of their family and friends to turn from bites and scratches. The ordeal left Hershel, Beth, and Maggie running for their lives once the doors of the barn eventually broke from their hinges that held their family and friends once they turned.
A week went by and they were able to get by with the few weapons they had. They lived off the land by eating whatever they could find and the remaining cans of food from abandoned buildings they stumbled across. Despite how careful they were about raiding buildings, Walkers still surrounded Maggie’s sister, Beth Greene, and Maggie and their father watched in horror as she screamed to her death.
Another month went by and the two found shelter in a small town. Their routine was the same every morning: wake up, go out together to hunt for food, come back, sleep, repeat. They came across a small group of kind people who willingly gave them supplies, so their collection of weapons grew even more. They decided to make another trip and hunt to have food last them a few days this one particular day. Those kind people that helped them previously ended up being a group of men who thrived off stealing and killing others for sport. They followed Maggie and Hershel into the woods before surrounding them.
“You can either give us your weapons and we can let the Walkers kill you as we leave, or we can kill you and take them instead. You two should know by now that the world has changed now. It’s the circle of life, folks. Survival of fittest. It’s the only way to survive now.”
“You’re wrong.” Maggie looked up at her dad as she watched him try to calm them down. “You survive by surrounding yourself with people you trust and help each other. The world has certainly changed but we can come together and work as a group and survive as best as we can.”
The leader of the group laughed as he stepped closer to the two. “Are you really that stupid? Those who think like you two won’t make it another month. You have one more chance to give us your weapons or we kill you two instead. Either way you will be dead because there’s no way you can go another day out here without weapons to fend off Walkers.”
Maggie sighed as she looked at her father. “Let’s just give it to them, Daddy. We can make weapons out of what we can find until we find more.” Hershel looked over at her daughter and smiled. “I have to believe there are good people in this world still, Maggie. Let me talk to them and perhaps we can comp–” Blood splattered on Maggie’s face as she heard the sound of gunshot and watched as her father fell to the ground below with a wound in his head. “Da– daddy!” Maggie cried as she fell to her knees and held her father in her arms.
“It’s about time your old man shut up.” The leader and his five followers laughed. Maggie didn’t even flitch as she looked up and saw the leader point the same gun to her head. “It’s a shame your father didn’t listen to a pretty little girl like you. I think I’m just going to kill you anyway and take what you have.”
