Islanders Keep Winning, Beat The Penguins In First Game Of Their Home And Home Weekend
PITTSBURGH–The New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins rivalry has been well established since David Volek buried the Puck pass Tom Barrasso in game 7 the 93 playoffs. Back then the Islanders dethroned the two-time Stanley Cup champs. Fast forward to the infamous fight night in February 2011. The Islanders demanded they be respected and hammered the Penguins in retaliation from their previous meeting. This rivalry carried over to the 2013 first round playoff match. The Penguins won in 6 but the Islanders held their own. The Isles started to become recognized.
Now both teams are in the top two position in the Metropolitan division. For the Islanders this is where they felt they would be at this point in the season. Despite all of the negative predictions prior to the start of the season, Islanders are proving how wrong they are. The Isles anticipated these two games on their calendar. They expected to be in a position where this weekend would not just be a measure of their future talent. Instead it is an early battle for the top spot in the division. Yes there is a whole lot of hockey to go. We are now in mid-november, the Islanders are 2 points behind the Penguins and they are making sure the league heres them loud and clear.
Last night was the usual Islander Penguin engagement. Back and forth play, Penguins coming back twice from 2 goal deficits. Pens Tied the game in the third, taking advantage of the Islanders heedless decisions on the ice. The difference here is the Islanders left with the win. The win was attained in a shootout, it should have never come down to that. The Islanders kept on letting the Penguins get back in the game. Jack Capuano is happy with the win, especially their current run, 7 wins in their last 8. He without a doubt was not satisfied with his teams breakdowns last night. Capuano, I feel again over coached by going with Chad Johnson. It is okay to go with your number one (Halak) back to back games. Watching Johnson give up 2 goals on the first three shots he faced was painful. At times he looked lost, out of position and not in control. I am a Johnson fan but he needs to nestle in as the full-time back up. His current play right now does not warrant him to be in the game against top teams. I have said this many times, The Islanders play much better hockey when Halak is in goal.
Ryan Strome continues his NHL emergence. He was the first star of the game with 1 goal and 2 assists. The Islanders and Penguins are on the Island tonight to complete this 2 game set. Isles look for the sweep and 2 points, that will pull them even with the penguins. Look for the Penguins to come out hard, expect the Isles and what should be a sold out crowed to come out harder.

New York Hockey Is Officially Back
After the Rangers run to the Stanley Cup Finals last year and the Islanders start to the season this year, I think it is safe to say New York hockey is back and in a big way. The Islanders are 10-5-0 with 20 points (1 point behind the Penguins for the division lead), and the while the Rangers start has not been as hot, they are right in the mix with a 7-6-2 record and 16 points despite some pretty significant injuries.
How do I know the Islanders are back? Well, I’m checking the scoreboard every game and care about the Islanders score. As a life long Rangers fan my concern for the Islanders, post lockout, was non-existent. The rivalry was only a rivalry when the two teams faced off during the regular season.
The knock on the Islanders the last couple of years has been defense and goaltending. Jaroslav Halak was traded for in the offseason and signed to an extension to solidify the Islanders between the pipes. Then whipping boy GM Garth Snow waited out teams with major cap issues and stole Johnny Boychuck and Nick Leddy. Not only did this upgrade the team defensively, but these two players take the pressure off and place the Islanders other defenseman where they belong in the defensive pecking order.
The Rangers have gotten off to a slow start, but due to major injuries they have been in survival mode since opening night. You can call it an excuse if you want, but if you take any NHL team and remove 4 of their 6 defenseman and their number one center you are not the same team. Last night vs. the Penguins looks like it could be the official jumping off point for the Rangers. It appears that Alain Vigneault has settled on his top 9 forwards. The turning point last season was when AV found the lines he liked and rolled them out all year. Chemistry was built and it lead to a Stanley Cup run. Reports are Dan Boyle will be back soon and once Ryan McDonagh is healthy is should be a fun winter at MSG.
It is time to enjoy the rivalry again and with the Islanders move to Brooklyn, it could not happen at a better time. I say this in the nicest way possible Islanders Nation, I hate your team again…..and that is a good thing!
