As we dive deeper into the frosty depths of winter, hats aren’t just a sartorial choice – but an everyday necessity. While those knit beanies and trapper hats might keep our heads toasty while the temperatures plummet, our hair underneath – which many of us take great care in styling every morning – unfortunately takes a hit.
Thankfully, you don’t have to pick between feeling comfortable and looking stylish. And though many of us have fallen victim to hat head in the past, we can now bid adieu to the frustrating winter hair dilemma with the following handy tips from Natalie South, a senior stylist and colorist with Takamichi Hair.
Know how you select clothing based on fit and fabric? Consider the same details when selecting hats, especially those that are lined. “This can make a big difference,” explains South, who recommends natural knits like cashmere and cotton. “These materials help minimize frizz, tend to not flatten hair as much, and also help with static.” And steer clear of synthetic fabrics (like nylon and polyester), which can make static worse.
Though this should be common sense when it’s frigid outside, make sure to completely dry your hair before putting on your hat, and heading out the door. Damp hair will take on the shape of the hat itself as it dries, resulting in an uneven, unflattering appearance.
Consider styling products.
“The wrong styling products can also contribute to hat head,” explains South. For example: if you have fine or short hair, avoid heavier products (think waxes, serums, and oils). But no matter the texture or length, always enlist a light approach to refresh your hair after wearing a hat. “Spray a little R&CO Spiritualized Dry Shampoo Mist at the roots, and use your hands to gently fluff up your hair,” recommends South. ”The combination of the product and your fingers add volume without any heaviness.”
