Man on Wire, 📸 Jimmy Chin from the top of the 1,776-foot World Trade Center’s spire, 2016 The skyscraper currently holds the title of the tallest building in the western hemisphere, even though the roof tops out at 1,368 feet (the height of the original Twin Towers) making it shorter than the Willis Tower in Chicago. This is due to the 408-foot spire that is part of the skyscraper’s architectural design, opposed to just an antenna like on the original Twin Towers. The actual height-to-tip of the building is approximately 1,792 feet to 1,796 feet (depending on which sidewalk you’re measuring from) due to the installation of a small lightning rod above the spire’s beacon. This question does not have a definitive answer, but if you are measuring height, it was not the 285 foot Flatiron. The Park Row Building across from City Hall was built three years earlier and would be 391 feet. The Tribune building built in 1875 was 260 feet, but it was all masonry and many academics argue a key characteristic of a skyscraper is a steel skeleton. The Tower Building, built in 1888 was the first NYC building to have a steel skeleton but it was only 129 feet. So if we measure height, the Tribune Building would be the first. A new report from Real Estate Appraiser Jonathan Miller finds that nearly half of all condos along 57th St - Billionaires’ Row remain unsold. Even after ultra luxury skyscrapers like One57 have been on the market for over seven years, they remain largely empty. And with the market slowing, several new luxury skyscrapers are in the early planning stages or under construction, presumably creating a large surplus of high-end condos.
