Finally getting around to talking about the start of my NYE with Porter Robinson as a play-by-play.
First off, if you know me or follow me somewhere else (IG, FB, Twitter) then you know that I am in absolute LOVE with Porter Robinson. His sets and music are transcendental to me. They speak to me on a different level. Me and my sister have been going to his shows in Vegas for so long that we've been given the opportunity to go to his shows on Porter's PERSONAL guest list at the clubs he goes to, either XS or Surrender. It's a gift that no one could have expected really but me and her were given it by him and his manager Dan, who submits the list each time. This all happened roughly last May when Porter said he could hook it up from now on. My sister who also loves Porter just as much as me wasn't going at the same time because she had to work the Crizzly and Protohype show for Ravealation, the party throwing company she works for and I was selling tickets for. She also is on Porter's list but our names are separate so we kind of have two guest lists which is cool.
Anyways flash back to last Friday the 27th, I invited my best friend to go to Porter Robinson with me. Here's a picture of me and her from my instagram here. She's never been able to go with anywhere and I haven't seen her much this semester of school because we go to different schools here in Vegas and we both work ya know? Anyways I was super excited me and my best friend got to finally go together. We met up at roughly 10pm and hung out in the casino because I don't want to be too early but want to be early enough so she can get a wristband for free drinks. (Damn you ladies in Vegas getting all the free stuff) Roughly 10:50 and I tell her to come with me. Now if you know anything about Vegas you know that when you're a guy a nightclub basically can't do ANYTHING for you without you slipping them a 20 dollar bill and even if you are on a promoter guest list you probably still have to pay a lump sum but if you are a girl you get free stuff all the time like entry, tables, and drinks. Since I'm on Porter's guest list when he's here I don't wait in line, nor do I have to pay. Being a guy and being able to do that is something that makes me giddy inside. The looks I got from people in line when I just walked up and talked to the promoter handling the guest list line, checks his phone with the DJ guest list, and immediately has our ID's check and hands me the pass so I can just walk straight in as well as a wristband for my best friend for free drinks for an hour. I mean what guy besides guys who are industry or high profile can do that in a Las Vegas club?
Porter's sets are like no other when it comes to an electro house DJ set. The high energy bangers mixed with the songs that make you feel something inside if you close your eyes. Possibly one of the best things about his recent sets are when he drops a little hardstyle. No matter who you are you enjoy it even if for just a little bit. Porter also dropped Lucid Dreams by Mat Zo. Lucid Dreams is one of my favorites of Mat's album. Here's an Instagram video of it from that night here. Want something a little grimy? Porter has got you covered there too. The difference between his DJ sets and his Venue sets is something else too. Here in Vegas most DJ's are many times restricted to playing banger after banger to appease the crowd. Luckily Porter's sets are able to combine the best of the bangers with his new musical feel which will officially debut with the coming of his full length album.
Also if you happen to know who Ryan/Ghostdad is then you know that he does all the visuals for Porter during his sets. They're a mix anime, epilepsy, kpop, and pure sex. Wild combination isn't it? But if you know anything about Porter then you know that it's such a good fit for him. Perhaps the best visual I love from Ryan I have dubbed the Sassy Skeletons. I've posted on my IG about them before but here's the video from that night featuring my beloved skeletons. You can follow Ryan on twitter @Ghostdad.
Now let's talk new friends, recently in the past few months came the emergence of what is known as the PR Squad. Basically think Blackjacks to 2ne1 in Korea or more commonly known, the Beliebers. The groups of superfans dedicated to their particular artist through the end. Because of this group I have been able to make new friends and meet a bunch of new people. Isn't that what these things are for really anyways? Well from Cali we have Chey and Robin!!! (Names have been linked to their twitters) Here's a photo of us together. True die hard members of the Squad and two people who I don't have a problem calling a friend because of this group. Rage hard and dance forever together girls. Robin had also brought along her two guy friends Chaz and Kirby whom were pretty fucking awesome. Sorry no twitters to link to. Just on the side, because of this group on Friday I was recognized by another member of the squad whom I had no idea who she was. She had said to me, "Oh I think I know you!" With confusion on my face I asked her how and her reply was with, "You're a member of the PR Squad aren't you?" The surprise on my face as that never really happens to me. We chatted for a bit and she said we should take a picture but it never happened. Oops. I also don't remember her name and she even told me her twitter handle. Double oops
So let's flash forward to the end. During Language me and everyone who wants to meet Porter have to leave so we can cool down from the sweat fest inside and all around just fix ourselves. Btw my sister, Jess got to show up for the last 30 minutes of Porter's set. So outside is me, Robin, Chaz, Kirby, Jess, Chey, and Chey's boyfriend and we're just hanging around until Porter comes out. He's followed by the MOB of people want to meet him too. We just patiently wait because we know he's going to talk to us anyways since inside we gave Dan a bag of gifts for them. I got Porter a pikachu hat and Dan a giftcard to Starbucks. Finally after the mob died out he comes to us and we get our turn. The nifty thing is that with the more well known fans we're on a first name basis. Anyways we just talk about random things like what they're going to do in the next few days and such. Robin explains the bag of gifts such as what goes to whom, Porter obviously got a lot. Ryan got a nice letter from someone and I got Dan the giftcard. Inside when I had to flag Dan to give it to him he kept thinking it was for Porter but I had to go "NO IT'S FOR YOU!" haha. Did I mention that Dan was cool enough to give me, Chey, and Robin a tequila shot and then do said shot together? Dan was super appreciative about the giftcard because he said that I was the first person to give him something. :D I didn't know what to really get him because I knew he liked rock 'n roll stuff but I decided to go with something practical that he could use for sure. I'm glad I was able to make him happy. A lot of people think he's a hard ass but naw he's cool. He only rushes Porter and stuff because they're on a time crunch. Got to talk to Ryan about Tacos El Gordo, which btw if anyone who reads this ever comes to Vegas, go there. Don't ask questions just go. Each of us got to do our little moments and selfies/snapchats haha and then we parted ways. The photo I did was with me, Porter, Dan, and Ryan. I like it a lot and think it's dope. You can see that photo here.
What a way to start my NYE weekend right? Well today is actually NYE so Cheers to you 2013 you've been good to me.
