This has been a tough week emotion wise. Some very good friends lost an equally good friend which has been very tough on them but I, along with a crack team of alcohol suppliers and shoulder supports have, I think anyway, helped them through. I've made a very good new friend who has introduced me to an abundance of new and very wonderful beers. I've had a shit week because of the impending doom that is the shit show I call my job. But ignoring that, it's been a great week. Shown us what family means. Volunteers I see once a year have been asking about my better half who I'd dearly missed this week and about my surgery, which btw I now have an official admission date and time for. Which made it very real one night which, not through alcohol made me gallop around the kitchen.

I have a couple of questions about your deep, dark past. I know your mother is Japanese-American. Is Asian culture anything you identified with growing up?

Not really. My grandparents on my mother’s side basically came over from Japan and worked in the sugar cane fields in Hawaii before ending up in California, and they were fairly traditional.

Were they in the internment camps?

Yes, they were. But my mother married a white guy and culturally she was always more tuned into American culture. I mean, she grew up in San Francisco and used to go see the Grateful Dead, so she was pretty Americanized. But I like Japanese things, sure. I really like Japanese stationary. [Laughs]
