in the middle of the cold spell? wierd.
According to the release the zoo put out, Blizzard (the polar bear), began showing signs of lethargy and lack of appetite about two weeks ago. He was anesthetized for the vet’s examination (it being probably not the safest to examine a polar bear while it’s awake), which lead to a course of antibiotics, and until this weekend when Blizzard appeared to take a turn for the worse. On Monday it was decided to anesthetize him so they could examine him again. Unfortunately, just like humans, being put under anesthesia always comes with risks, and Blizzard was already pretty sick. While he was waking from anesthesia, he experienced respiratory distress.
The necropsy (animal autopsy) done Monday evening found signs of inflammation, fluid in the chest cavity, and abnormalities in the heart. They are continuing to look into his health issues in an attempt to diagnose him.
