The Apthorp Apartments Landmark of New York This apartment house, completed in 1908, was built by William Waldorf Astor and designed by Clinton & Russell. The site is on De Lancey Farmland. Acquired by Charles Ward Apthorp in 1763 which passed to his son-in-law, Baron John C. Van Den Heuvel, about 1792 and to John Jacob Astor in 1879. As the faith of St. Sava's cathedral in NYC is hanging by a thread, maybe the church of São Domingos in Lisbon can be seen as a was to avoid demolition and the uprise of a high-rise.
