5. Favorite song at the moment. Favorite song of all time.
Favorite song of all time: During my sophomore year of high school (‘76-‘77), my English class went to New York City to see the New York Shakespeare Festival revival of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera at Lincoln Center. The poster from the show was iconic, showing a head and shoulders portrait of Raul Juliá in a bowler hat with a walking stick. As I just mentioned him, it is of note that Raul Juliá starred in this production of Macheath (Mack the Knife).
My favourite song of all time is from this show. Specifically, the version from this particular production, sung by the amazing Roy Brocksmith. After enjoying the “Overture” played by the pit orchestra (who I had a fantastic view of from the balcony front), the stage lights came up with Mr Brocksmith (The Ballad Singer) alone on the stage, slowly operating the crank on a small street organ. As he sings, he is gradually joined on the stage by other town folk until he is singing with a full chorus.
The song had been made famous by Bobby Darren in 1959 (although the song is much older). It has been covered by many including, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and even Nick Cave. It was also famously performed by Lotte Lenya, wife of Kurt Weill the composer.
Roy Brocksmith, the talented actor who performed this version, is probably best known as Dr Edgemar in the 1990 film Total Recall. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0110735/
