Danish polar explorer, Knud Rasmussen, was born June 7, 1879 (d. 1933)…

Rasmussen carried out several expeditions (over the period from 1912 to 1933) in the Thule region, both to chart the inland ice in Greenland and to collect artifacts and testimonials of anthropological interest. He also went further afield and was the first European to cross the Northwest Passage by dog sled.

Rasmussen was a colorful character and raconteur - not politically correct by today’s standards. I cherish his notion of “Nysyn” - seeking a high place from which to survey the terrain and find a route through the seemingly unpassable…

His other motto was: “Give me winter - give me dogs! The rest you can keep.”
