#Repost @1tremenda with @get_repost ・・・ I had the privilege of attending American Dreamers: The Immigrant Artists’ Voice in the USA, presented by the @nytlatinonetwork The talented and inspiring panel consisted of @sebnoelle @locosporjuana @sitachay #terezalee and @juansaaaa and moderated by the one and only @marlenafitz Thank you for the invite! . . These amazing artist and advocates shared their stories of immigrant and Dreamers issues, along with how their art played a huge role on their immigration status. Tereza Lee is the original DREAMER that ignited the DREAM ACT. As a 17 year old in highschool, she wanted to continue her studies as a pianist, but being undocumented she was not allowed to attend any colleges. Other panelist shared that they received prestigious scholarships to universities but due to a lack of a green card they couldn’t continue their education. . . There’s a terrible stigma associated with undocumented immigrants. They are seen as criminals, terrorist, non taxpayers and unproductive members of American society. A 2014 statistic stated that 11.7 billion dollars of taxes were in fact paid by undocumented immigrants... . . All panelist had one thing in common. They wanted a chance to live in the United States to attain a healthy, happy, life where more opportunities would be available. A majority left their country due to economic and war crisis. Juan Escalante is also from Venezuela. I can attest that the current situation in Venezuela is horrific, unsafe and a low probability of anyone being able to achieve their dreams. . . With so little and the odds greatly stacked against all these incredible panelist, they achieved so much. I thought of how lucky I am to have never had to deal with immigration issues because I’m a naturalized citizen. I also thought that there’s no excuses for not achieving what you want in life. I was privy to hearing their unbelievable stories that would leave most deflated and bitter. Instead they were filled with faith, hope, love and wanting to help create opportunities for others... #dreamers #daca #istandwithdreamers #love #hope #immigration #nytimmigrantarts #nytimes #nyc #venezuela
We all got the memo to wear some shade of red and black. Meet the new Bolshevik progressive party. Very diverse this time! @mritawe @sebnoelle @sitachay @deyamartinezl #ihw18 #nytimmigrantarts
